This past Christmas was great. It was more about the individual and less about remembering everyone and their likes and dislikes. Why? Because we decided to do Secret Santa instead. In discussion with the family we nominated a dollar amount and not to include the children under 14 years then mid year we wrote out the names on a separate card of our treasured family members and addressed an envelope to match their name. A neighbour was entrusted with making certain that the person on the envelope was different to the person on the card.
The ensuing months and weeks pre Christmas were of frenzied phone-calls to check with partners the desired gift for the recipient. This endeavour was satisfying for all involved, the gifts were well received, and the time and money usually spent was far less, with added items added to the festive menu instead.
The benefits include, really knowing what our family member wanted, and the added contact with family and the real surprise when the gifts were unwrapped. It is the best idea yet!
