Hello!

Last week and the week before our family was struck down by the flu. High fevers for 4 days straight, sweating, coughing, headache etc. One thing my child did not do properly in the beginning was drink lots of water and ended up getting dehydrated. So I would just like to remind all those carers if you r child gets the flu or a cold drink plenty of liquid. Water is fine, but some hydrolytes are good idea if you have high fevers and sweating as you will loose a lot of body water this way. More than you expect. The hospital recommended juices too.
I hope everyone keeps fit and healthy and manages to avoid this horrible virus.

  • Yes, staying hydrated is most important when you have the flue, even more so for babies and elderly as they dehydrate quicker. To be honest I can’t remember when we had the flue, a healthy diet with plenty of fruits & veggies daily helps to boost your immune system.

  • Yes plenty of rest, fluids & analgesia is the key to surviving the flu. I also would recommend getting the fluvax, we do every year.

  • There are some terrible viruses this season. A family I know was hit hard like yours. Electrolytes are definitely very important when you are sweating out a virus and losing vital fluids – especially in children, as they tend to get dehydrated more quickly. So far I have managed to avoid the flu, as I had my shot this year. Unfortunately my son can’t have the flu shot, as he is allergic to eggs and it contains egg albumen. I work in health, so I try to protect him by getting the flu shot myself so that hopefully I don’t bring anything home, as things tend to hit him hard respiratory wise as he is also am asthmatic. Your story is good advice and a great reminder to us all. Wishing your family all the best and hope you are all recovering well.
