Hello!

I am in the process of typing up my study. It has been used as a dumping ground for the last 5 years for school books, paper stuff and regular books and there is not much room to move around or put things so time for a tidy up. Does anyone else have the same problem and how do you go about it to get the job done quickly?

  • Don’t think to hard about getting rid of something, just do it!

  • First, the ask the family if they want anything out of the study. Next, get three boxes: recycling, throw, donate. Start at the entrance and fill the boxes or until you have run out of time. Then do that again and again. Buy storage for stationary or bookshelves if you must. If things have a place, then it may be easier to sort.

  • It will seem massive but you can do it! Plan manageable stages. Get a few garage backs and be prepared to Chuck stuff. 4 piles- rubbish, charity, maybe, keep. Don’t be sentimental – if it’s been sitting there for 5 years and you won’t use it in there next few months, it goes. If you’re not sure if you need it, keep it for 2 months and get rid of it then. Everything gets a spot- I even have a ‘junk’ bowl or draw to put odds and ends. Start with getting one space clear, like the desk. Then the next space, like the corner of books. To do it quickly focus on the big picture, so don’t fuss over the stationary. Get stuff out and give things spots. Another day when you’re motivated do the little clearing- like ordering the pens and pencils. It will seem like a big task but a start is halfway there. Good luck!

  • I don’t know about quickly, but I’m trying to do a bit of tidying every day.
