you named your baby what?!

I have just recently had my first child and had the task of finding a name for her. I did my research and searched through naming websites and books waiting for one to jump out.

In the process, I read through so many suggestions chains on social media and forums. It actually started to upset me, because some people are naming their children such ridiculous things, in an attempt to out do eachother. It makes me feel terribly sad for the children, who have to live their lives in the shadow of a name that sets an impression before people have even met them.

As a person that grew up with a different name, it is a struggle. Yes, I like that it made me unique. But no, I didn’t like the pause before my name when a teacher tried to figure it out, having the sniggers around me when it was said wrong. Having to correct mispronuniation and spelling, explain where it came from.

Naming a child is a daunting task, I know. But some people need to remember, this is a human being, not a pet. Poor little Pilot Jet-Inspekter…

I think as a parent you have a responsibility to give your child a name they can live with all their lives.

Strange? Perhaps if they are made up for no good reason but a joke. But we all must be careful that we don’t judge poor little Fook Mi’s mother and father because they happen to be from Japan. Sometimes I think people need to open up their horizons on names and understand the cultural backgrounds people come from too (not insinuating that you were doing this, I too believe Pilot Inspektor, Apple and poor little Trixie Bell are poor choices!)

I like to buy personalised name gifts for children but there are some names that you just can’t get 🙁

Yes, there are some strange names out there and strange ways of spelling the traditionsl ones!
