Have you been asking your child everyday “how was school?” and getting the response “good” or “I can’t remember”?

Here are ten great questions to ask your child which will get them talking and give you more insight into their day.

  1. What was the best and worst part of your day?
  2. What did you do in Science today (art, music etc.)?
  3. What subject did you enjoy the most today? Why?
  4. Who made you smile today?
  5. What was the funniest thing that happened today?
  6. Did you find anything hard today?
  7. What games did you play at lunch/recess?
  8. What did you learn today?
  9. What’s the nicest thing you did for someone today?
  10. What are looking forward to tomorrow?

All of these questions are great conversation starters to help give you more information about your child’s day. Don’t ask every question everyday, just pick one or two and make sure you lead by example and get them to ask you questions too.

A cute little way to get the family involved is to place all of the above questions into a box and ask everyone to pick one or two at dinner time, they then get to share the answer with everyone.

How do you get your kids sharing? Any tips? SHARE with us in the comments below.

  • This is especially good as by the time I come home from work the kids have talked all about their day and I ask them and just get an ‘alright’. Specific questions are really helpful.

  • I will have to remember these, because usually i only get one word responses after school, so if i try a few more questions, hopefully that will help!

  • These questions are really good way to start a conversation when kids are really not in the mood to talk I always get the answer “good’ when I ask my daughter about school. I will ask some of these questions and will she how she respond.

  • These different questions are a great idea. I have had the answer to “how was your day” constantly answered with “good”. It can be hard to pull out more info sometimes!

  • I always ask my preppy what his favourite thing he did today was and my kindy boy gets bombarded with silly questions as well as serious ones, did you play outside today? Did you shake your butt? Did you sing songs? Did you dig for worms? etc our kinder keeps us very well up to date on the kid’s activities so I can ask all sorts of silly questions to help him get talking and laughing (speech delays)

  • I just wait for them to eat and relax and then bombard them with those questions hahaha

  • many schools are now using apps which might show some photos of what the kids have been up to during the day and so they are good starting points for conversations.

  • Thanks for some great ideas, my kindy toddler can never remember and just says ‘good’ when I ask how school is.

  • Great suggestions here for getting kids to open up. I would be interested to know if they actually work in practice though

  • Oh yes, I remember those conversations well! I wish this list was available to me back then. I just wanted to know how they were doing, if they were struggling, but it was so hard to get a good answer

  • Such a good list I am always lost when asking questions and my son used to answer everything with the answer nothing but now that he is a little bit older he is interested in answering questions and conversations these questions will help greatly

  • We used to have question time at tea time around the family table – all the kids could ask a question which I would honestly answer and then they would answer my questions [hopefully honestly]. It was a great time to get to know each other and to bond.

  • Great questions to ask, I usually ask the same boring ones but now I’ll have more to add.

  • These are great questions. I also ask who they played with that day. Open ended questions are more likely to get more detailed answers.

  • my son is in prep this year and as with all of my kids I ask them what their favourite thing was that day, my preppy loves it and chats non stop all the way home

  • We always chat on the way home in the car and I make sure to get at least a small amount of info out of them but there is a couple of good questions there I have not tried yet.
