Originating in Africa, and being brought to America by slave traders, peanut butter has become a staple in the western diet.

High in protein, peanut butter is a vital part in many people’s diet. However, peanut butter isn’t just a good way to get your daily dose of protein, it has some other interesting uses as well…

1. Giving medicine to a pet

It can be really difficult to get your pet to take a pill. They will fight right until you manage to get them to swallow it. If you want an effective way to get them to take it, coat it in peanut butter. This is a favourite of cats and dogs, and they will eat that pill in no time.

2. Odor killer

Fish is delish, but whenever you cook it inside the house, there is always a fishy odour that hangs around for days. In order to get rid of this, get the pan which you have cooked the fish in, and melt some peanut butter into the pan. The smell of the peanut butter will overcome the fishy smell, and a house that smells like peanut butter is a good house in my opinion!

3. Gum remover

Kids and gum never end well. They will end up with it in their hair, in the carpet, just everywhere. So to easily remove it, simply dab a small amount of peanut butter onto the gum, let it sit for a few minutes, and wipe away. If the gum doesn’t come out, try sing some olive oil in conjunction with this.

4. Butter substitute

Peanut butter can be used as a butter substitute! If you are ever cooking a dish that requires butter, try using some peanut butter instead. This will give the dish a much sweeter and nutty flavour. For example, if you are making brownies, melt some peanut butter into the mixture, and you will get a delicious slab of peanut brownie, YUM!

5. Cockroach catcher

When you have finished a jar of peanut butter, lay it on its side near where you believe the cockroaches to be hiding. They will then walk into the peanut butter jar in order to get a delicious sweet treat, but will be trapped in their peanutty graves! When you have captured a few bugs, put the lid on and throw them out!

  • We love peanut butter too, but with a nephew with a severe allergy and several friend’s children with the same allergy, we are very careful how it is used in our house in case they drop by. Unfortunately with the seriousness of the consequences for those with a peanut allergy I think any article on peanut butter should also have a reminder to take care if using it to freshen your kitchen or leaving jars around for pest control. My nephew would even react to the smell and become very ill.
