After you have a baby there seems to be a time of fashion limbo where your figure is in between having the baby and finding its way back to something that kind of resembles your old body.

Just after I had my bub, I found it really hard to work out what to wear and I wasn’t prepared to spend money on buying clothes for this transitional stage.

I found that although it was easy not to bother and to wear overly baggy clothes, it did nothing but make me look like I was still pregnant and it absolutely killed my confidence. When I did finally get out of the comfort of my PJ’s and tracky dacks, what I did do was shop my own wardrobe by sorting through the clothes I already had and pulling looks together that made me feel good. I also chose clothes that I could easily breastfeed in and covered up all my wobbly bits.

So if you’re a new mum and currently in this stage of fashion limbo, these are my five tips on what to look for in your wardrobe:

1.  Look for pieces that will create curves.

I don’t know about you but for me post pregnancy was all about dealing with an entirely different body shape. It seemed my figure was straight up and down, I had massive milk jubblies (boobies) and no waist or hips. So to help create some curves I looked to wearing peplum tops, flowy skirts and empire line tops and dresses to help create some body shape. If you’re a hippy and a curvy kind of girl choose V neck and scoop neck tops and light fabrics that skim over your body.

2. Choose clothes that have buttons so you can easily breastfeed.

This seems like a no brainer but when you’re a new mum and you’re that tired it’s easy to put on a dress and forget that a little person needs access to your milk bar. To save you the awkwardness of having to pull up your dress and sit in your undies in the parents room just choose clothes with buttons!

3. Wear your fabulous accessories.

Accessories are awesome, you most probably have a heap of things you love and there should be lots to choose from: cocktail rings, purses, earrings, necklaces, bangles, hats, scarves and sunnies. When all else fails just wear fabulous shoes!

4. Pull out everything that you feel comfortable in.

With comfort comes confidence, so pick pieces that don’t dig into you or ride up. I think it’s totally okay to wear leggings as pants but if you feel self-conscious just wear a long tunic over the top. Harem pants are great and so are summery maxi dresses. Try and steer away from clothes that are super tight and polyester, especially in the first week after having your baby to help you cope with the post-birth sweats. Remember elastic and cotton is your friend!

5. Cover up a bad hair day with a headband.

The days of taking an hour to blow-dry and straighten your hair will feel like a distant memory, but luckily cute topknot buns and braids are the hairstyles of the day, so whip your hair up and put on a headband or gorgeous headscarf.

  • What to wear when breastfeeding is my main issue, I don’t like most breastfeeding tops and with my first, they got stained by milk so were a waste of money. This time I’ve got bonds maternity singlet I can wear comfortably and pull up my shirt but still have my belly covered. I have so many tight fitting tees that won’t be flattering with a post pregnancy belly I may need to invest in some more flattering flowing ones

  • Maternity clothes are such a waste, you only wear them for a such a short period of time, after I gave birth I think I still lived in my yoga pants, just added more flattering tops as zI got my confidence back!
