A mum has been ridiculed for asking an anti-vaccination group how to protect her three-year-old from an outbreak of measles.

The mum posed the question to the Vaccine Education Network: Natural Health Anti-Vaxx Community group on Facebook.

“My three-year-old is not vaccinated and there is currently a measles outbreak in my state,” she wrote.

“Any suggestions for precautions I can take to protect her would be very appreciated.”

A screenshot of the post was shared on Twitter and it has since been re-tweeted more than 12,700 times.

One woman labelled the mum “incredibly selfish” while a man asked, “can people really be this stupid?”

Another man compared not vaccinating children to not allowing them to wear a seatbelt in a car.

“I don’t understand why it’s unlawful to allow your child to not wear a seatbelt in the car, but it’s lawful to not vaccinate your kids?” the man tweeted. “Potential consequences of both is death.”

  • Asking on the site she did, there should had been some helpful hints for her. I grew up in a time when we did not had vaccs against some of the diseases we now have. I would never willingly put my children through this. My oldest when the mump/measle needle first came out I got him done. It was a pity at that time that different states had different times for it. When my son received it in NSW it was not being given out in QLD which could had saved my cousin’s oldest daughter from death.

  • Oh dear, (just sitting here shaking my head)

  • Keep your child isolated until the outbreak has gone, but then another outbreak could start up at any time. Might just be easier to vaccinate your child. Unless there is a medical reason why they can’t be vaccinated

  • Lol. I love that we live in a time where people ask questions like this.

  • Oh wow, that picture of the measles is terrifying!

  • Unless it is known that a child has a life threatening allergy to a substance in the vaccination why would you not protect your child by vaccination.
Prior to a change of ingredients in the tetanus vaccine, we had to hope my Mum never needed another one as she had a really bad Allergic reaction to it.

  • Vaccinations are so important in this day and age. I just don’t understand why some parents choose not to. When illnesses like measles were once practically eradicated, and now because of anti vacc parents, no wonder why these illnesses have returned.

  • I can’t believe someone would be asking something like this. Surely she’s just having a joke? I don’t understand why you wouldnt vaccinate your kids 🙁

  • Firstly, I don’t understand how she’s being ridiculed when she posted this on an anti vaccination page. Surely everyone on that page would be of the same opinion?! Secondly, I don’t understand how she can be so ignorant. The obvious way to protect your kids from theses diseases is to vaccinate them!!!

  • Mmm, now let me see….how would you protect them? ……perhaps vaccinate them!!!

  • Kids should be vaccinated and it’s cruel not to

  • I believe in vaccination. Sadly I have seen the impacts of particular diseases on people and it is devastating and in some cases life changing.

  • I want the best for my children and to see them live a long, happy and fulfilled life – so I chose not to put them at risk of diseases that can be prevented by vaccinations. We have state of the art medical facilities who produce these vaccinations so why would you risk not vaccinating your children – I can only imagine the heart ache that comes when a child dies from a disease/sickness that could have been prevented by simply vaccinating them!

    • Exactly! prevention just makes perfect sense.

  • When it comes to this topic many people don’t cope well with a different opinion and become really disrespectful, which is sad I think.

  • I will never understand why parents choose not to vaccinate

  • Makes we wonder how educated she actually is when it comes to vaccinations!

  • It still think it is strange that we make such a big deal of measles considering many generations before grew up with it and it was such a mild disease that immunity was built up naturally, many people actually wanted their kids to get the measles in the past for that reason.

    • Are you thinking of chicken pox because measles was never regarded as a mild disease. It is highly infectious and can cause death

      • Both measles and chicken pox are not mild diseases. And back then, before vaccines, many many many people died from these diseases. Are you suggesting we go through this again just so a few can build up immunity naturally?

  • This is concerning I hate to think of kids too young or with compromised immune systems being exposed to these outbreaks.
