An incredible bond between identical twin sisters has reached new heights after they gave birth within hours of each other, at the same Melbourne hospital.

Gillianne Gogas and Nicole Patrikakos shared the same due date, but neither of them could have predicted that they’d give birth to their baby boys at Epworth Freemasons last week just five hours apart.

The 36-year-old sisters just as shocked as everyone else at the amazing coincidence.

“The timing, you just can’t plan something like that. So yeah, disbelief, shock, excitement, all of those emotions,” Gillianne told 9News.

Twins give birth on same day

Gillianne gave birth to her son Alexander at 1.20pm on August 22, and her sister Nicole’s little boy, William, arrived five hours later. And incredibly, the boys also had the exact same birth weight – 3.5kg.

“(We were) very close growing up. We have always done everything together so this is just another example of that,” Nicole said.

“We have always sort of done things in sync … and yet it is still quite unbelievable,” she said.

The little cousins were both delivered by the same obstetrician, Dr Joseph Sgroi, who says the births were a first for his medical team.

“It is not something that is common. It is not commonplace for even sisters to give birth on the same time or on the same day,” he said.

Interestingly, the cousins are actually closer to brothers, thanks to their identical twin mums.

“We know that they share 100 per cent of their DNA so these two boys, whilst they may be cousins they are actually more akin to brothers in terms of their gene pool,” Dr Sgroi explained.

We’ve previously featured identical twin sisters the USA who also gave birth just hours apart, at the same hospital … and their boys had identical measurements!

  • This was a lovely story which brings some joy to watching the news.
However, from what I heard from an extended family member, they actually didn’t want to do the story. They were advised by staff that they had to get hair & make up organized by the following morning as media were coming to do the story. They weren’t exactly thrilled but had no choice. It was still a nice story to hear.
