There are calls for Australian parents to have access to 52 weeks of paid parental leave, with claims the nation has the second-worst government funded paid parental leave scheme in the developed world.

The Australian Council of Trade Unions made the call, as part of its new report which addresses the gender pay gap, the unequal care burden on women and workplace harassment.

The report claims that closing the pay gap and supporting women to participate in the workforce at the same rate as men would generate $111 billion into the economy annual. And it would lead to an additional 893,000 more women in the workforce.

“Australia has the second worst government funded paid parental leave scheme in the developed world. In 2022 women shouldn’t have to give up on having a family and men shouldn’t miss out on being involved in raising their kids because paid parental leave is insufficient,” said ACTU President Michele O’Neil.

The union is flagging increasing paid parental leave from 18 to 26 weeks, and mapping out a path to increasing it to 52 weeks by 2030. The leave could be shared between parents, with ‘incentives to drive equal parenting’ and superannuation paid on all leave.

Child Care Subsidy

The ACTU is also floating making early childhood education and care free and accessible, and bringing forward the increases to childcare subsidies from 1 July 2023 to 1 January 2023.

“Early childhood education and care will pay for itself by women being able to work and pay tax. Bringing it forward and eventually making it free should be a no-brainer.”

  • Yes! And flexible with which parent takes it, not just the birth mother. That way all family’s can use it to maximise time with bub

  • When i had my 1st child there was no payments, we saved and we put aside money for that time.

  • 1000% should increase the pay longer! I wish I was able to get 52 weeks payed leave and be able to spend time with my tiny baby and not stress about finances.

  • I’m all for it. 18 weeks paid leave is no way near enough for young families. Something needs to be done.

  • Of course it’s wonderful when this paid for. But do realize that the whole nation and all tax payers have to fund the implementation of this leave. There are many people who never got to a taste of this, yet have to fund it for others.

  • This is something that should have been implemented a long time ago
We are in 2022 there is so much equality for non traditional roles now and support and enter the most basic traditional role is still ignored
Bring on 52 weeks parental leave it’s about time

  • This would be an amazingly supportive incentive for the government to help raise birth rates in this country. Many are forced to go back to work because of the rising cost of living. It also turns people off having additional children, so the extra mandated paid leave would be a godsend to many families.

  • My baby is 7 months and I’m not ready to go to work, he breastfeeds through the day and I’m sleep deprived half the time. Money is an awful issue right now.

  • Wouldn’t that just be amazing! Returning to work when baby is just 4 months old or so is just too too young!

  • That would be great but don’t see it happening

  • Thaty sounds amazing but could give an incentive for people to have children just for the money.

  • I am totally all for this but can we afford it and who’s paying for it? Can either the government or businesses afford this? I can’t see small businesses paying their staff 1 year mat leave.

    • Yes certainly a lot to work out to make it work.

      • Yes I think that is kind of concerning

  • I’m all for increasing the leave payment I just don’t know how our country’s budget can afford it. And I’m surprised we have one of the worst leave arrangements because I’m quite sure in Asia there is no such thing as paid parental leave.

  • Would be great but where does the funding come from?

  • That’s a great idea! This would be good to spend much time with the baby

  • This would be fantastic!

  • Wow this would be amazing, I had to return to work after 26 weeks as I didn’t have enough leave and financial
Couldn’t afford to have unpaid leave.

  • It certainly would have taken some of the stress off our family with having a years paid leave, but I would like it to be shared with hubby, so he could have some of the quality bonding time.

  • I’m sure everyone will be in favour of this, however, they better also be in favour of much higher taxation to pay for it. Those countries who already do this do have a very high rate of taxation also.

  • What a great idea. Would be great for the babies to have a parent at home for the first year.
