Kate Reddy is back! This is the follow-up to the international bestseller I Don’t Know How She Does It, the novel that defined modern life for women everywhere. This time she’s juggling teenagers, ageing parents and getting back into the workplace, and every page will have you laughing and thinking: It’s not just me.

Kate Reddy is counting down the days until she is fifty, but not in a good way. Fifty, in Kate’s mind, equals invisibility. And with hormones that have her in shackles, teenage children who need her there but won’t talk to her and ailing parents who aren’t coping, Kate is in the middle of a sandwich that she isn’t even allowed to eat because of the calories.

She’s back at work after a big break at home, because somebody has to bring home the bacon now that her husband Rich has dropped out of the rat race to master the art of mindfulness. But just as Kate is finding a few tricks to get by in her new workplace, her old client and flame Jack reappears – complicated doesn’t even begin to cover it.

This is a coming of age story for turning fifty. It’s about so much more than a balancing act; it’s about finding out who you are and what you need to feel alive when you’ve got used to being your own last priority. And every page will leave you feeling that there’s a bit of Kate Reddy in all of us.

  • Leave the housework behind, go to the hinterland around Port Macquarie, take some shade, a stack of books, and a flask of tea, that will do me

  • I’d read Mouths of Mums with a block of chocolate whilst hiding from noisy family members in my bedroom!

  • Massage, pedicure, then sit down with a glass of wine and a good book…maybe some chocolate.

  • I would make the most of a day off and would do some shopping for me (not my kids as per usual) and eat at a restaurant that I want to go to (usually I dine at places where I know my picky kids will eat their food)!

  • Something just for me, uninterrupted! Read a book. Listen to my favourite music. Do some embroidery. Eat my favourite lunch, while it’s hot. Anything would be wonderful really, as long as it’s uninterrupted…

  • Sleep in, then I’d go to the Movies and just relax and immerse myself in the film knowing that I didn’t have to worry about anyone else.

  • Unplug the phone, order uber eats, and plug myself into some sloth TV. Kardashians, Real Housewives, if it’s bad I want to watch it. Just recharge my batteries without the Wiggles singing in the background.

  • Go and see my mum! Her twin recently passed from bowel cancer. Mum was by her side til the end and is very down. Then I would pop into see my grandson, who I only get to see once or twice a year

  • Have a stack of pancakes for breakfast. Then put my feet up and watch singin’ in the rain. Followed by some serious window shopping and lastly volunteering at an animal shelter. Nothing is more rewarding then washing and playing with dogs that just want to be loved again.

  • I’d make the most of a very rare day off and treat myself to a morning of shopping for new clothes or, shoes or handbags , a decadent lunch and finish off with a pedicure. manicure and massage

  • completely relaxe for once and do nothing but eat chocolade

  • I would take a step back to 1950s America where ladies could to the beauty parlour for hair, massage, facial, manicures, chats and coffee.Very Lucille Ball with white robes, girlfriends and laughter.

  • Back massage!

  • A morning beach walk, lunch with Mum, followed by a massage and a wine with my friends around a cosy fire.

  • Catch up on some study and sleep

  • I would pick up a book, go sit in the sun and read ‘How Hard Can It BE?’ to my hearts desire…

  • A day off on our cattle station
Is only true in my imagination
I yearn for a day to call my own
But would only end up getting the lawns mown
A BBQ with friends and a glass or two of wine
In my imagination, would suit me just fine!

  • Expectation: get my eyebrows properly tamed and my hair restyled!
Reality: plan meals, grocery shopping, washing, vacuuming, pay bills, indulge in a cup of tea and an episode of Outlander (while ironing) before picking up kids from school.

  • I would love to go have my hair styled and my makeup done, just to feel a little glamourous again even for a little while!

  • Anything that involves me, and only me.
    Goodbye Kids!
    Goodbye Family!
    Goodbye cares!
Just me and some nature and a bit of alcohol. A Jacuzzi would definitely help.
