My youngest is in year 6, so next year High School for her too. She is 12 turning 13 this year and Down Syndrome. The school she goes to is a Prep – year 2 mainstream school, so we don’t have to change location. Transitions are a weakness for her, so we are already preparing with visuals, visits and meeting the high school staff members

Three of my four kids have gone through this transition and they really sailed through it and two of them have left High School well and are now in university.
Yes, my best advice would be to listen and take time for anything they share. I’m sure you can remember how it was for yourself. Sharing stories can help too.

Aww congratulations on making it through primary school! I remember how nerve wracking it is when your child starts high school! Firstly I don’t think there much you can do to prepare just be there for him, listen to how his day went if he feels like talking and be prepared that he might not if he’s exhausted free a big day. We found that our kids would be pretty quiet on the way home but having dinner at the table together or going for a drive to the shops etc helped keep communication open. There’s always an adjustment period as they learn their classes, teachers and new friends. I’m sure it will go well and he will love his new school! Good luck
