Hello!

My 4 year old still hates haircuts. This has been an issue since his first haircut. Although I’ve managed to do it myself I would like to go to barber once we are out of lockdown but am dreading it. He literally has the biggest meltdown and I eventually just leave. Anyone else go through this? Any suggestions on how to make it less traumatic for both of us?

  • How did you get on?
    Would love an update

  • I would look in to either a child friendly hair salon, where they’re really specialised in cutting hair by kids or get a child friendly hair dresser attending your home. In preparation to hair cut we watch you tube kids video’s, read books about it, made songs up, go through a social story, cut hair on dollies too and act out role play (Kmart has a great hair dressers kit!)

  • First idea that comes to mind is having him sit on your lap for it. Does he have a tablet or ipad he could use? Or maybe your mobile? Something else to focus on

  • All I can say is persistence my 16 year old still hates haircuts but I eventually get him into the barber after he becomes to shaggy to see anymore.

  • For my kids I talked to them about what a hairdresser does to their hair. I then found some videos on you tube of kids getting hair cuts to watch to show them what it looks like. Then we walked past the hair dressers in the shopping centres and stopped and watched them cutting hair. All the time asking would they like to get a haircut? For my daughter once she said yes she was ready she was 3 and half by then I took her to a private in home hair dresser as I knew a noisy busy salon would be to much for her. (By 6 she was more then happy to go go a big Salon.) My son had his first cut in the private salon and there after a barber, but same process small steps. Get then comfortable with the idea and make it their choice.

  • I think start slow. Are there any hairdressers that primarily focus on kids? We have a local one that has little airplane seats for kids and games to keep them occupied. Or perhaps just doing it at home until he’s comfortable.

  • My 3 year old daughter is the same she hates the hair falling on her I’m taking her to a hairdressers that does cool milkshakes and snacks too in the hopes that might help distract her

  • Positive stories and books about getting haircuts can also be helpful.

  • We bought a cheap large doll head with hair and let my son cut that before his own haircut. He still struggled but it made a difference

  • I’d suggest taking him to a child friendly barber or get your husband or another male who he likes to take him. Also make sure to take him when it’s really quiet so he has time to get to know the person cutting his hair. Another way would be to take him every time you or a family member get their hair cut to show that it doesn’t hurt. You just need to persevere and the day will come when he wants to be first in the chair. That’s what I did with my boys. Good luck

  • Hairdresser here :) I would suggest trying to find a kid friendly salon- one that has cars they sit in, or can watch cartoons etc. A patient stylist and explain what your little one is like. It may take a few go’s. But you will get there :)

  • I thought my 2 year old would scream the place down when he had his first haircut. Our usual hairdresser was on maternity leave so had to take him somewhere else. The place I took him to got their ipad out and put cartoons on for him and he didn’t move. If I had tried to cut his hair he probably wouldn’t have ears. Ask around where you live, family, friends etc, where they take their kids.

  • Some kids are scared of strangers and this child feels scared and I would get your husband to have a haircut with him and you let your husband take him you stay away.

  • I heard that kids are behaving better with professionals than parents….but maybe take ipad or something to distract him

  • Finding a hairdresser that is child friendly with a welcoming environment can be a big help.

  • If you google hair cut sensitivity and look for occupational therapy suggestions you’ll have a lot more success hopefully , good luck

  • A treat that he really loves but rarely gets would be one way to bribe him into sitting still in the hairdressers. The ladies usually are better with toddlers than male barbers I found.

  • I’ve seen some hairdressers with those car seats in them.
Maybe it will be a novelty for him to sit in one of the cars while he gets his hair cut?

  • My son ran around the hairdressers the first time I took him and found it distressing. I then tried to involve him in the process, and find the right person to cut his hair whilst providing treats and plenty of distraction. Persist. You’ll get there.

  • Lol, my 7yr old still hates brushing hair !
    Re hair cuts;
Try haircuts at home. I cut the hair of everyone in the family myself
(when youre not confident doing so you could take a hairdressers cutting course)
    Visit the salon.
    Go shopping.
    Try mirrors.
    Do silly.
    Add music.
    Add iPad / tv
    Start with partial nail clipping.
    Use a timer.
    Offer a reward.
