Hello!

Is the ‘5 second rule’ really true? I do keep my kitchen floors really clean but worry if I drop something.  Am I meant to throw it away or is it OK if it’s only been a few seconds? I figure my kids pick up things from the floor all the time while they’re crawling around so it shouldn’t matter for a couple of seconds should it?

  • It probably depends as well on the surface and the product

  • I’m not too fussed about a bit of germs

  • In this case yes the 5 second rule is ok. Id even stretch it out to 10 secs on your clean floors

  • 5 second rule doesn’t work but if it’s something you can wash off, such as a hard lolly, then it should be fine.

  • Men seem to think this rule is fine!

  • Depends what it is. I think being TOO clean is unnecessary, and my kids and I rarely get sick. If you can dust it off, I reckon it’s okay.

  • You don’t know what you have walked on that is on your floor not noticed by you. I know they say we need to build up our immune systems but one of us could have unknowingly walked through something highly toxic.

  • If it touches the floor, it will pick up germs, dust, hair etc.

  • If it is food , throw it out immediately as bacteria can be digested and children can get sick from it no matter how clean you think it is . I have never heard of that rule and no one has informed me about it .

  • 5 second rule works for us

  • Cool! Really interesting comments read on this!

  • Depends the surface I bet, if it’s at home I am more lenient with the kids.

  • I depends on what you drop and what surface you drop it on. The wetter the food the more likely it will pick up bacteria. And if you drop it on tiles it will collect more bacteria than if you dropped it on carpet.

  • Sadly it’s not true if it falls on the floor it will pick up germs instantly in saying that my kids find and pick up stuff all the time, it just builds there immune system.

  • just give it a rinse under the tap :)

  • I really do not think so!!

  • Depends what’s been dropped, of course dropping food like a slice of bread is thrown out, cutlery is rewashed…

  • oNLY IF ITS CHOCOLATE..LOL..but seriously there is no seconds that are safe

  • Really depends on how clean your floor is and what type of food I suggest.

  • we don’t have an issue as we have a two second dog ;)
