Along with my comments below; it is also important to set boundaries about where it is appropriate to talk about things. Clearly finding the right time to discuss issues is important and it is not ok for children or adults to be disrespectful in front of other people or in public spaces; again it is all about respect.

We have always been advocates for lots of conversation and debate in our family; of course there are non negotiable boundaries and respect is a number one priority. Also; no swearing is allowed and everyone needs to control their emotions. Being able to express opinions and feelings as children grow can be quite a journey!

My 12 year old girl with Down syndrome starts to back chat a bit, but actually I think it’s more being sassy. For long she was considered to be non-verbal and had no capacity to respond. Currently I welcome any response and often she makes me small. In my approach I always consider if what she says would bring her into trouble at school and set boundaries clear when needed. I’m careful not to make it a battle of will and prefer a light playful but clear approach whilst always making sure that she knows I hear her.

My kids are 10 and 13 and I’m getting attitude from them both from time to time. I think it’s fairly normal for kids from the age of 7 or younger. I think it is important though to correct each time and not put up with it as the behaviour will worsen if you don’t.
