Hello!

Can we share some old school treats our mum, aunts, grandma use to make us?
I remembered as school fares it was such a hit to have home made toffees sprinkled with sprinkles, who can share this recipe with me?

  • Oh the good old days hahaha I loved the good old toffees and toffee apples sad now to see that you cannot buy Toffee Apples anymore. Bring back the 80s lol

  • You can’t forget about chocolate crackles and the crunch nut cornflake cups. I don’t know what they were called but boy they were yummy! It’s funny how easily pleased we were with cerial in patty pans! I think we overdo things these days, spending hours making things perfect but hey that’s just me, I’m nostalgic

  • My Mum was always the best at making Toffees. I remember being called to the Principal’s office in Kindy and worrying I was in trouble only to be sent home with a huge, heavy bag of sugar for my Mum to make extras for the Fete lol. I can see that Anita has shared the recipe below but don’t forget “Stick-Jaws”. They are made when the toffee is still not quite form when testing in cold water.

  • Yesss! How good were the toffees! I see the recipe has already been shared so I will just say that fairy bread and the pink and white coconut slice is a classic I remember all the parents making, I think if was called coconut ice. Chocolate spiders were great too! Melt chocolate and mix in crunchy fried noodles and spoon into ‘spiders’ and refrigerate. You can even have smarties for eyes

  • Sweet and delicious jelly slice was always my favourite go to sweet treat to find at fetes and also for relatives to make and give as a homemade gift. I still love the look and the taste of jelly slice; it has never ever lost its appeal. It is my go to treat at bakeries too.

  • I make Toffee Apples often buy smaller apples any kind (I also use small pears). Mix 3 cups caster sugar, 1/4 cup liquid glucose, 1 tsp white vinegar and add 1/2 tsp red or Green food colouring. Heat these ingredients until dissolved. Then bring to a boil, watch and see when it thickens. I use a teaspoon dipped in and let it drip when the coating is thick and not runny take off the heat. Place a wooden spike into each apple and dip in the toffee and place on a greased paper tray let cool. I wrap these in cellophane wrap or clingwrap until ready to serve. These keep for weeks! These are always a hit at parties all year round for kids and big kids who remember these as children.

  • I remember buying toffees, toffee apples, and chocolate crackles.

  • Nice!

  • Oh yes!! I used to love toffee. Chocolate crackles were another favourite, although I don’t think I have the recipe anymore.

  • I loved making lolly cake when I was little. It is a New Zealand favourite. Now that we are living in Australia it is not an easy thing to make but if you can find a store that has the right lollies it is so worth it. It is yummy and lots of fun to make with the kids. Growing up in the 80’s, there was so many yummy snack treats but this was my ultimate favourite.

  • Honey Joys!
    90g butter, 1/3 cup sugar, 1 tablespoon honey & 4 cups Corn Flakes – plus 100s & 1000s for decoration!

Preheat oven to 130 degrees. Mix wet ingredients and melt (I do this in the microwave). Stir in Cornflakes. Spoon into cupcake wrapper lined muffin tin. Bake for 10min until golden.

I got cornflakes from the ColesFest promotion earlier in the week and planning to make these on Friday!

  • Toffee in the patty pans! Oh my, the memories are flooding in and so is the taste and smell haha! And such a distinct texture. Opening the fridge and seeing all those patty pans lined up was heaven wasnt it.
Another that aligns with the toffee in my childhood- is CHOCOLATE CRACKLES!

  • My mother didn’t cook – and we didn’t have any family – so I didn’t get any home made treats. To the extent that one day I had a slice of cake in my lunch box, and a friend automatically assumed someone in my family must be having a birthday, it was that rare/

  • Toffee with 100s and 1000s was something my mum always made for our class parties on the 90s! And lock jaws, a toffee patty that wasn’t hard set and almost glued your teeth together. thanks for the nostalgia hit!

  • We have a toffee recipe in the Mouths of Mums recipe section!
