Hello!

Ok mums I need some help. My 18 month old likes to keep shutting our back sliding door, so I’m looking for something that stops it moving so it can’t be shut unless by an adult. Dowel won’t work as he will just pick it out. I know you can get lots of things to stop a door from opening and other things that jam in the door to stop their fingers getting trapped but ideally I’m looking for something that holds the glass door in place while it opened. TIA

  • We have some wooden poles what we place in the sliding frame to keep windows and doors open and closed

  • If I had to, I would drill a hole up the top somewhere to slide a pin or peg into to keep it open. If you can’t do that, buy some of those pool noodles. Slice them open length wise and fit over the door. It won’t stop them sliding it to close it but it will stop their fingers from being jammed

  • You need something to slide in at the top of the door. If you have the door all the way open, I’m guessing you could wedge something in that chocks in tightly

  • We had the same problem and would lock the door shut so little fingers didn’t get sliced off. We have a pin to lock (positioned on top of the door) it but maybe another hole in the open position would work too

  • jam the piece of wood up the top of the door to prevent it from moving

  • Sounds like you need one of those screw in thingys. I had to get one for mine, the kids loved to always shut our sliding door too. Ummm, I think I got ours from the hardware store. Although you can buy an awful lot of safety things from general stores, like Target, BigW etc

  • I would say if you popped into a hardware store they would be able to help with you what you could use :)

  • A slid bolt installed at the top of the door at the appropriate open position

  • we have a catch at the top of the door (slip bolt) to keep it shut

  • Have a lock put in to the ‘open’ position as all as the closed position.

  • i’d ask at bunnings as they have a lot of cool stuff

  • Put a bolt lock on the frame of the sliding door and drill a hole for it to slide into at the ‘open’ end and the ‘closed’ end (added protection from thieves too).

  • did you try putting a door slide stopper?

  • You need to get a stopper that works from the top.

  • there are some good comments here

  • what did you end up using

  • you could keep it locked

  • Lots of great answers hope u found a solution

  • you need a door jamb that you can put in the track. I would be saying no every time he tries to open the door, or a light tap on his fingers, better that then he gets his fingers caught in the door. Otherwise keep it shut and he will have to come to you to open it. Just to get him out of the mindset he is in. It is all an adventure for him.

  • Once you’ve figured out how to keep the door open you’ll need to find something to distract your son from the door. Try to work out what it is he likes about it: the open-shut game, the banging noise? Find a less lethal alternative for him and hopefully he’ll become less interested in it. Also, make as little a fuss as possible when he shows an interest in it. Good luck!
