Hello!

I love to cook dinner for my family but will now be working nights so am looking for ideas that are reasonable quick and will re-heat well for my family. Am thinking curries, tacos, slow cooker… but just wondering if anyone else that works nights has any ideas?

  • Things like lasagnes can be made in advance and reheated. Most pastas and slow cooker meals will work well.

  • Not that I work nights but Susan Austin’s Frostbite and Frostbite for Toddlers to Teens – are great recipe books. Food that you pre-cook and freeze. I do Quesadillas from them fairly regularly. There’s soups, risotto, all sorts of things…

  • I find most things reheat very well. I often slice and cook potatoes then grill later with some herbs and spices (about 10 minutes from a cold grill warms them up and browns the top while something else is warming up in the microwave). It is also very surprising how long things stay warm in an oven. If you cook a one-pot oven dish, turn oven off and leave it can still be piping hot after 1 hour.

  • I agree with a big cook up on the weekend and freezing portions of dinners to grab and go midweek.

  • What has worked for me is cooking on the weekend and freezing portions for reheating for midweek dinners ie; curries, stews, make your own schnitzels that freeze well.

  • Depends on what time you start work. I typically wirk half days. So if i start at 9, i’ll be home at 3, or if i start later, around 11, i’ll make dinner before i loewve. I thend to use simmer sauces, or make pasta, things that won’t take long

  • Make a large amount when cooking and use it the second night or freeze.

  • You could prepare vegetable omelettes. They just need to reheat it in the microwave. Or soup, always a great option.

  • if you have a slow cooker they are great. can do prep the night before have in a bowl ready for the morning. pour into the slow cooker bowl then turn on and head to work will come home to a meal ready to be served :)

  • Also get the family to help with planning ideas too.

  • Lasagne, pasta bakes, shepherd pies, these can all be premade and frozen

  • I would suggest all meals that can be easily stored and frozen. Shepherds pie is always a winner and pasta sauces and pasta can then be easily put together.

  • I love slow cookers! Or make stuff that you can freeze and take out. Cook up big on a Sunday so u have Monday Tuesday meals.
Pre cut veggies (I’m not good at the though)

  • Pizza is great, thin veal ,chicken or beef schnitzel with salad and chips, spag bol always good. pie and rice or mash, vegy bake, lasgana.

  • We do chicken or beef casserole when one of us works nights

  • Sooooo many recipes for the slow cooker, so many variations, you never get bored. For quick and easy cook ups that dad can do, pizzas, toasted sandwiches, soups, eggs and toast. There’s a bit out there :)

  • I don’t work nights but have made loads of curries, stews also Mongolian beef, brisket savoury chicken all in my slow cooker and everyone loves them
