Hello!

I’m going on a plane trip with my 17 month old and wondering if anyone has any advice on what to take on board or any tips really. Thanks.

  • I’ll be travelling with my nearly 2 year old next month. I must admit that I’m dreading it! There have been some great ideas already!

  • I was diagnosed with cancer 4 years ago and lived in outback QLD at the time. I had to fly 2 hours to Brisbane every three weeks for treatment, with my then 18 month old. All up that year I did 17 flights with him, so I remember my routine well.
Snacks, lots of snacks.. little foods they can manage themselves. Water and if still having a bottle, give it to them on ascent or descent. Don’t push a nap unless they need it or its a long flight. Obviously take nappies, wipes, a change mat and spare clothes just in case of diarrhoea..you never know.
An activity for ascent and descent like a sticker book is good. A tactile thing like a board book with lots of different textures, ribbons, ties etc fascinates them and keeps their interest. For the flight, a DVD player or iPad. At the time, we used a Leap pad or a mini lap top with downloaded shows like Sesame St and Play School. He loved those shows and I managed a nap with him on my lap, watching a show or two!
Also something to draw on and just a few pencils. Not too many as the pencil case can easily go flying!
    Hope this helps.

  • I’m in the same boat, ours is going to be an 8hr flight. Been told to bring a change of clothes for the LO, myself n dad just in case. Have a small packet of wipes, a couple of nappies and cream/powder for a quick change if needed in flight. Was told to put those in like a makeup bag for a quick grab to go toilet rather than changing on seat. They expect the child to sit on you most likely but at check in, ask for a free seat next to you. A few toys for the child and if you child has a dummy, make sure they have it for take off and landing orhwise bottle or food for those.
Also was told to dress bub in layers, easy to remove if you are going to a tropical destination when we get there. Some plastic bags so you don’t mix clean and dirty clothes
    Good luck, hope that helped.
