Hello!

I have a front loader washing machine that despite using a descaler & special machine cleaner, my clothes still have that mouldy smell to them. I usually wash at 40C & use fabric softener. Anyone have same problem or hints that may help?

  • I do once a month a wash cycle with vinegar and bicarb on the hottest temperature possible (95C). Also important to leave the door from the washing machine open when not in use so it can dry and ventilate.

  • I use disinfectant and hot water for one wash with no clothes in it. Seems to work well.

  • Do a rinse cycle with a cup of vinegar. Seems to get rid of the buildup inside my machine

  • I use vinegar in my machine to get rid of smells. It does the job & doesn’t stay on clothes.

  • I run my washer on a cold cycle with white vinegar. We haven’t had a problem with bad smells since.

  • I was told by a repairman that using a dishwasher tablet & allowing the machine to run through a normal cycle works well for the odours & the plaque that builds up over time.

  • Run a cycle with vinegar

  • Hope you have had some success with the tips?

  • I ran a cold cycle using bi-carb soda and vinegar, it worked a treat! Good luck. :-)

  • Vinegar and bicarbonate of soda will clean your machine and make your towels smell fresh too.

  • It happened with me. I did 3 washes with white vinegar and always after I do my wash I leave the wash machine door open. It didn’t happen again.

  • Try vinegar! It’s good for cleaning and also can be used as a fabric softener!!

  • I agree with the MoMs who have suggested running a cold wash cycle with either bi-card, or vinegar, or both.

  • I would put some bi-carb soda thru a empty load of wasing use that instead of the usual washing powder.. and wipe dry with a dry cloth once the load has finished.. and if possible leave the door slighty ajar between uses… So it can air..

  • I leave the lid of mine open for 2 days after use.
My Auntie used to put dettol in rinse water without clothes in it once a week.

  • I use bicarb and vinegar for everything and this is no exception. They are amazing!

  • I do a hot wash with a scoop of powder and it work’s wonders!

  • I have a top loader, so not sure if this will help you. With my top loader, it’s recommended to do a warm wash cycle with vinegar added to the water. I’ve done it a few times and don’t have any smelly problems

  • I sometimes use a couple of drops of lavender oil in the machine to keep clothes smelling fresh. Alternatively I sometimes use some eucalyptus oil.

  • Not my question…but thanks for the incredible answer Cherz! You are a STAR! :)
