What do you love to do? Can you see yourself making a living from it? Say, for example, you’re an artist. Can you churn art out every day? Will you be able to work on commissions? Are you willing to “sell out?” Many people turn their hobbies into successful side hustles. They then go full time only to find that they run out of steam. It’s one thing to do something you love. It’s quite another to deal with customers who’re happy to tell you what’s wrong. Some companies fail because they don’t deal with these clients properly. They don’t check industry best standards in customer support.
There is quite a bit involved in having a home based business
Firstly – you need to know what you want to do : ie do you want to be a consultant for something like Jamberry or Tupperware etc, or do you want your own stand alone product?
Secondly – what are the skills that you already have ie: are you great at sewing, or baking or photography
Thirdly – check out the following websites: https://abr.gov.au/ https://www.business.gov.au/smallbusiness https://www.ato.gov.au/Business/ – or the individual one if your going to register as a sole trader
also there are business coaches that have great websites with loads of links like: http://themakerscollective.com.au/ – a great one if your making your own products to sell
Lastly make sure your prepared – plan, research, work out social media etc – there are lots of aspects and it can get quite daunting at the beginning, but just make a list and work on one part at a time in little chunks, step by step should see you develop a great business plan and get you off on the right foot
Best advice would be to find something that you love doing, and that you think there is a market for the do your research – ask friends/acquaintances if they would buy it. Also, have a think about what type of business you want to have too – do you want to have to store stock or can you drop ship etc
Talk to your accountant about setting up the business side – sole trader/company etc, they will also be able to help with abn, registering your business name and all that side of things.
I actually have my own small online business, its all set up and ready to go it just got put aside for a few months while i focused on the kids, but i sell new lego individually on a site just for that. I’ve got an abn, registered name and all of that. But i can’t remember any of the how we set this all up, or came up with it.
