Hello!

Hi mums
I was wondering how many schools out there are requiring an iPad when they start prep/foundation? My niece is going to school next year and there seems to be a few in our area and was wondering is this something that is now becoming a staple when starting school. It seems an expensive requirement.

  • I had not heard of this & I should think it wouldn’t be!
If it is a requirement then the school should provide!
I wouldn’t want my child learning from a iPad.
I don’t own an iPad myself, why would I buy one for a child!
To much technology in schools today, I prefer the days where we put pen to paper & opened a book to do our research.
What’s next, wii sports instead of actual sports?
    It seems absolutely ridiculous!
Soon enough there won’t be schools & teachers, children will just learn from a computer or robot!

  • It depends on the school and their philosophy and how they teach

  • It’s not a mandatory requirement in most NSW public schools. We have computer rooms where the kids will have classes. The school may have some they borrow for a lesson and share around the school. A private school may ask for this but I have not heard of any so far.

  • Not that ive heard of, and it shouldnt be, if my school told me that id tell them they can buy it then if my child requires it so bad, as it is obviously their lazy style of teaching if they need an ipad to teach the kids.

  • it completely depends on the school.

  • I have not heard of this being a mandatory requirement.

  • Not here in south australia but it may depend on the year attending and school policies

  • It’s certainly not everywhere, but it’s becoming more widespread.

  • I have alreay put in a answer for this question, but thought i would mention that we just got my sons school report earlier this week and he is failing in computers eg how to turn them on and how to log in. Might be a idea for her to have one before then to practice using one. Looks like i will be buying my son one sonner than i had planned to so his marks will improve by the end of the year. . He is in grade 1.

  • i heard yes by the time my girls get to primary schoool they will be in, i got one each for xmas last year and they have learning words and games they love it

  • It depends on the school! At ours, it’s a requirement from Grade 5 but it also needs to be a specific model of ipad in order the get the correct apps.

  • well they will have access to them at school. Not required. It will be more like grade 5 or 6 and if they need them for their classes. My friend has her son in school at grade 6. He has a laptop that he pays for in installments through the school. He can take it home as well. He isn’t allowed to put any programs on it or even personalise it until he leaves school and has paid fully for it.

  • They do get lesson in school in year 1 (in my daughters school – Private) and they get to play on it in Kinder. But it is not a requirement.

  • they are not required and have not been fully implemented into all schools. however they are encouraging and incorporating more technology elements into teaching particularly with the new Australian curriculum so I wouldn’t race out and buy one but I would start encouraging your child to learn basic technology skills. Otherwise they do teach them at school with their facilities. private schools may be different and have some requirements for these.

  • We don’t have to buy one but they are definitely getting lessons on them!

  • I don’t think you’ll find a school anywhere in Austealia that requires someone so young have an iPad. It’s a nice addition, but I wouldn’t think it was a necessity

  • with my Sons school they only have about a hour a week where they use one or a computer both of which is supplied by the school,The low amount of time is due to sharing with all levels in the school, I do wonder if they had one each how much it would be put to use. his school is public and in victoria. Is it a public or private school that she going to attend?

  • In my idea it’s not a requirement. Some schools can ask for it, but not the majority.
