Hello!

I haven’t used many aromatherapy oils before, so I was wondering which ones are the best to use to create a calming atmosphere. Any suggestions would be fantastic!

  • Lavendar, rose, vanilla and sandlewood are all lovely scents. Don’t use if pregnant though

  • I don’t use oils but would think lavender would be relaxing.

  • I have heard a lot about aromatherapy too and wondered if they actually do anything. I know they make the house smell nice

  • I love using lavendar for relaxation – a few drops in a bath, on the underside of a pillow or with water in a room spray (works well as a ‘bad dream spray” too). I also find citrus oils and peppermint can really help clean my head and lift my mood.

  • There are some great blends out there, Jurlique or Endota Spa have good ones. Also lavender is a relaxing oil. We burn a lot of peppermint oil. We love the smell and its medicinal properties

  • Some beauty/health spas will do a test where they can tell you what your preferences are. Some oils should not be burnt and as someone else said some are not suitable during pregnancy particularly if you plan to rub them on your body (some are linked to miscarriage, early labour, birth defects, complications etc)

  • lavender is great unless you are pregnant and you have to extra careful with it. i find vanilla is a great calming scent and makes the house smell good

  • lavender is a must in this house but then so is rose

  • I love lavendar

  • Lavender is really good i found!!

  • I can’t live without lavender. I have lavender candles, essential oil, oil burner and now you can buy lavender oil in a spray can (love it), fantastic for pillows. When our DD wa a baby she had colic for the first three months and I started using some pure lavender oil on her pillow, now at 16 years old we all still have lavender oil on our pillows – very restful, relaxing and a lovely fragrance.

  • sandalwood is a favourite of mine :)

  • ive always loved the lavender smell

  • there are some good comments here

  • Ylang – ylang, Vanilla & Lavender are my favourites for relaxation.

  • lavender is a nice one.
Sometimes just simmer rosemary sprigs and mint,
Other times Orange peel & Cinnamon.

  • i like using lavender :)

  • Sea Breeze is one I like

  • I suggest lavender and chamomile but in an oil burner not direct on your skin.

  • Aromatherapy is very under rated here in Oz and advice should only be taken from a qualified Aromatherapist, as some oils interact badly with some medications. It depends on the reason behind wanting to create calming atmosphere?

For example is it due to stress? lack of sleep? grief?

Each oil has many different properties and should be used sparingly due to their potency and NEVER neat on the skin, exceptions being lavender or tea tree. Some oils can burn particularly when present on the skin and in the sun.

Feel free to email me at vicky@sanctuary4souls.com.au with a more in depth explanation and health history for a list of oils safe for your family!
