Best Musical Instrument to start with?

Hello!

My children are 10 and 8, what would be the best musical instrument to learn? they have no previous music lessons and we’re not a musical family.

It really all depends in what they’re interested in. You might find it takes a few instruments before they find one they enjoy

I think at ages 8 and 10 they can learn just about anything they choose. Apart from what they are interested in things to think about are (a) size … can the child manage to hold the instrument… Violin/ guitar are one of the few instruments I know that come in different sizes so small (or young) children can also learn them. But by 8 they can probably manage anything. (b) cost…. Recorders are nice and cheap and don’t tend to break and are often a good starting point to learn the basics. (c) sound … keyboards are also very popular since even young children can learn to strike a key and get a nice sound quickly. But strings need much more skill to put finger in the right place.. and even recorder can be hard with breath control to get a nice sound. (d) maintenance… some instruments like guitar will need constant tuning, someone to replace strings etc. and you generally have to do this yourself every time you play.. but piano will last a lot longer before you get in a tuner.. and electronic keyboards are good to go for a long long time (and can use headphones if the noise is an issue for anyone else). My daughter started with the recorder. Another great choice is the violin.

Piano, drum, guitar are all lovely options. But yes, totally depends on your childs interest I would say.

My son started on a keyboard. They learn to read sheet music, which is so valuable. A lot of children i know then went on to do guitar afterwards as well. I guess it also really comes down to what your children are most interested in as might not be inclined to want to learn something they have no interest in.

FInd something they have an interest in not necessarily whats easiest, because if they have an interest they will love it!

i think keyboard/piano. i was about that age when i started learning and am not very musical. but really enjoyed it!
