Hello!

I like to make my kids cake for their birthdays and special events. I currently use a chocolate cake that I can make unto five days before decorating. I would love any suggestions for other cake flavours and recipes that I can make well in advance.

  • My toddler loves white chocolate flavoured cakes.
I think you can also try things like caramel or strawberry as you can’t go wrong with the classic flavours.

  • You could always freeze your cake and defrost close to use I have been on a roll with the coles un iced mudcakes and been stacking them to make a variety of cakes i found pocky sticks are awesome different coloured and flavoured pretzel sticks dipped in chocolate they are a cool decoration just add a variety of lollies an ice magic drizzle and your done.

  • I think any flavour you choose is going to be great.

  • Mudcake! Oh yummy!! and super easy to carve if you are doing a different shape!

  • I use vanilla sponge and then freeze so it’s easy to icing or use fondants

  • There are some fabulous ideas and recipes from this post – thanks so much for posting!

  • I always liked to make chocolate mud cakes as they were quite heavy and looked good for a birthday cake. But recently my kids have found a new fascination for light cakes that can be stored for days and can be made easily. They are not too fond of mud cakes these days. So, I tried two different cakes over the weekend – one was an orange and macadamia cake and the other a Raspberry, white chocolate and macadamia cheesecake. My kids loved the orange one more. You can find the recipe for the cakes on https://www.duck-creek.com.au/

  • I would go with heavy cakes. Any form of mud cakes would do the trick. There’s a whole range to chose from. There’s white, dark, milk chocolate & caramel mud cake options. Switch it up by adding citrus or berries.

  • For an alternative to chocolate I would go with a butter cake. You can colour and flavour in a variety of ways. It is also easy to carve if you want to shape it.

  • My boys love icecream cakes which can be as difficult or easy as you want and as they are frozen can be done in advance (if you have the space in the freezer)

  • I find mud cakes or fruit cakes are the only ones that keep well for several days unfortunately

  • Butter cakes are always good. You can flavour them how you like or add food colouring to make different colours. They keep quite well especially once iced with a butter cream frosting :-)

  • I do a pinata cake, its 3 layers, and the 2 bottom layers have a hole cut in them and filled with mini m&ms the cake is then frosted and have kitkats all around the outside, finish it off with a ribbon wrapped around it.

  • Caramel or white chocolate mudcake – keeps really well, remains moist and is delicious!!

  • Thank you all for your advice and suggestions. I am taking it all on boards. So many good ideas!

  • My favourite cake at the moment to make is just a butter cake recipe that I got off of taste and add a packet of strawberry jelly crystals. It makes it pink and the taste is really yummy. You could also use that recipe and divide it into batches and colour each batch a separate colour then bake an layer to make a rainbow cake. Also another option is to add a whole orange to your chocolate cake mix to make a choc orange cake. Google “whole orange cake” – you really do use the whole orange.

  • I like to use strawberry and vanilla as well, if your making a minion cake then there is banana flavour as well and because its an easy cake to colour you can change the colouring on the inside. If you go to any cake supply website they usually have a numerous amount of flavourings. Just be careful not to add too much as the cake can become overly strong very quickly. My business is Cakes by Candi.b on facebook. If you need some ideas there are some there too :). Happy baking.

  • Butter cake is lovely and you can add anything to it – fruit, choc chips, coconut, lemon – anything works with it

  • You could make your agmajatd cake and turn it into a pinata able by hollowing out the center and filling it with lollies and then coving the cake with chocolate. I have seen this done where the cake was booked in a dome shape or you could have two layers of cake and shape it yourself.

  • confetti cakes are also great and very easy to do.
