Hello!

We recently had to have our Fisher & Paykel washing machine repaired, which wasn’t a cheap exercise, as it was just out of warranty. The repairman said that the problem was caused by a build-up of fabric softener in the machine, and that I should stop using fabric softener of any type. Do any Mums have something else I can use to soften fabrics, that won’t damage the washing machine?

  • Vinegar works – give that one a try :)

  • Softly is a great product to use on woolens and hand wash items, give it a try!

  • I only use fabric softener on sheets and towels. The rest just get earth choice washing liquid – as it is grey water safe and I use the water on the garden.

  • Good old vinger cheap effective and safe around kids :)

  • I’m addicted to fabric softener – if you see someone at woolies smelling the softeners, kt could be me! Good to know vinegar works too

  • goodluck in keeping your laundry soft

  • I was telling a friend about the vinegar, and she said she’s used it for years. She’s made up a bottle of white vinegar with just a couple of drops of lavender oil in it, and her laundry always smells fresh.

  • its good to know vinegar works and doesn’t smell :)

  • Was going to say the same thing about vinegar in the final wash does make the clothes softer and no smell either.

  • Believe it or not, good old white vinegar does a great job. I put a capful in the wash and a capful in the fabric softener compartment and it really does soften things. I buy a two litre bottle from Aldi for just over a dollar and it lasts forever.
And a bonus tip , run an empty cycle with hot water and vinegar and it gives the washing machine a really good clean too !

  • I just use a good laundry powder most of them have a built in conditioner that does not harm the machine

  • I use the Fluffy Dryer sheets that you put in the dryer, they are great for finishing off the towels.

  • I don’t use it either. Hanging washing outside seems to do the job better and the washing always smells fresh. In winter, even hanging til nearly dry and finishing in the dryer does the job.

  • I have never used fabric softener i let the wind do the softening

  • Fabric softener gunks and clogs up your machine. Try using some Epsom salts or washing soda crystals, this also cleans your machine, and if you want a nice perfume to the towels etc try adding a few drops of lavender oil. Sweet As. Good luck.

  • i use softener myself and didn’t know this!

  • I use wool wash in every load but if it is a jumper knitted I would soak it in Lux flakes and if I do use fabric softner I never use the dispencer in the machine I mix it with water and add it straight to my washing

  • I’ve done two loads of washing today, and used a tablespoon of vinegar in the final rinse. Clothes were lovely & soft, no smell of vinegar, and the washing machine looks a lot cleaner too. Think I’ve found the answer to my problem. Thanks everyone.

  • Its amazing the gloop that builds up from fabric softener. I still use it as I like the smell it gives my clothes etc but I make sure I use a descaler cleaning agent monthly to get rid if it

  • i agree with the other mums, i have never used it, dryer softens things up if they get to crispy.
