Carrots - to peel or not to peel! - Mouths of Mums

Hello!

Don’t come at me for asking but my husband and I have differing opinions on this. Do you or don’t you peel supermarket-bought Australian carrots – that don’t have any roots sticking out?

  • I have never ever peeled my carrots from the supermarket as the skin provides a lot of nutrients that are so good for you. I would just give them a really good wash to ensure there is no dirt on them and then cook them as you like to enjoy them.

  • Never peel, good scrub and all good.

  • Great question! My husband tends to leave them unpeeled whereas i pretty much always peel. I dont know why… I grew up peeling them and so it’s routine. I often feel like they aren’t clean if they aren’t peeled lol like Im cleaning off the dirty outer layer. My hubby will be happy to hear he’s doing them the healthier way!

  • We never peel Carrots young ones get a quick wash with cold water and bi-carb and rubbed with a soft cloth. Winter Carrots or larger ones I use a scourer lightly. The vitamins are just under the skin. We grate carrots into a lot of our mince dishes to add fibre.

  • I agree with your husband ChiWren 🙂 Washing or scrubbing them with a brush is totally fine ! It does not only safe time, there are nutrients and fiber concentrated especially in the outer layer and you also reduce food waste by not peeling. I also love the taste from roasted vegetables with peel.
However when I use carrots raw I do like to peel them

  • I just had this same discussion with my husband haha. He says not to peel, that there is more fibre in the skin so it’s beneficial to keep it on. I prefer not to scrub root vegetables extra hard every time I want to eat them, so peeling is the easier option. Especially if I’m eating it raw, I much prefer peeled.

  • Sometimes I don’t but it also depends on the season. If the skin is thicker and is noticeable after cooking i will peel until late spring.
