Hello!

Hi. We’re trying to decide about getting a new car. Although we’re only pregnant with our first, we’d like to look at buying a car for now and beyond. We’d ideally like to have 3 kids so need to be able to fit 3 car seats across the back seat comfortably – does any one have any suggestions? Apart from a Territory, which we know is HUGE! Thanks for your help!

  • We have a territory and while it seems huge with one child with four – which we have it is suddenly the right size for all ages.

  • Our Kia Sportage does :) it’s great

  • I would be looking at a smaller car with good resale vale like a prado

  • I’m glad that other people have answers to this one. I have no idea! lol

  • Good Old Holden Commodore fits 3 without an issue.
Any of the 4WD’s should be fine

  • We have a Territory and it’s really not that big — my SIL had a Kluger and she now has a CX-9 and those are much bigger than ours! We love our Territory because of the boot space — we can still fit a full load of shopping even with the double pram in there and we find it very comfortable. We have mate with 3 children and she drives an X-Trail, much less boot space but all the car seats fit in comfortably. Good luck, getting a new car is always exciting!

  • Ford territory. We have 3 seats in the back and still have plenty of room for all ouf our camping gear.

  • Since going through this myself and doing a lot of research, I found the Holden Captiva the best car. Has plenty of room for all the car seats, luggage and shopping, best value for money without losing the most important feature of safety. I usually have 4 kids in it, my 3, including twins, and my nephew comes everywhere with us and there is heaps of leg room for us too. It is a slightly bigger car but take one for a test drive as they really don\’t feel like you are driving a tank. Best of Luck

  • I would be looking at the car seats not the car, If you can get slimline safe seats that do not mean the children are sitting on top of each other that will fit in your current car i would be soing that. Have you thought of a station wagon type? they generally have more room.

  • it is more about the car seats than the car. I was able to fit 3 carseats (the birth-4 years ones,so no booster seats) in my Toyota corolla, which is a small car. I have infasecure kompressor’s but safe n sound Compaq are better safety wise – just have a higher price tag.

as for cars, we just bought a Hyundai ix35 which I really like, but our budget wouldn’t have stretched to many bigger cars anyway. I do hear lots of great things about territory’s though

  • Have a look at the Mazda cx9. I have one it is bigger but im only 4 foot 11 and I got used to to quickly. Hope this helps :)

  • We’ve got a mitsubishi Outlander, and it fits 3, but is very tight and tricky to use the adult seatbelt with the booster seat – you have to squish your hand down and do it blind. Gets frustrating if the kids are in a mood. Best of luck.

  • We own a mitsubishi triton dual cab and a Vy commodore wagon. The triton is squashy and not much room for a third seat but thr commodore is spacious. Have had to booster seats and new born seat in it and it is a great fit. Mainly trial and error. It depends on what seats you intend to use for each child.

  • I got a mazda 6 2005 model and we all fit comfortably, and it’s cheaper than a commodore :-)

  • A commodore can fit 3 comfortably and it’s rear seat leg room is deep enough not to have the little ones kicking the back of your seat constantly!

  • Thanks for all your help!
We’re still looking but are thinking probably a Mondeo or Camry/Corolla.
Also, the suggestion of asking about 3 slimline car seats was great, i’ll definitely do that (but hadn’t thought of that yet – can you tell I’m a newbie ;-) )

  • I have a Mazda 3 and I have 3 across the back of mine with no problems

  • I only have one car seat in my Rav atm so I can’t tell you if they’d fit in there but I have a friend that drives a Pajero with 3 car seats comfortably in the back and it doesn’t seem much bigger to drive than my Rav4.
    Good luck :)

  • there are some good comments here
