Hello!

“Ok im after any moms out there who have a child that has been diagnosed with irlene syndrome. im after someone that has actually gone to burwood and been diagnosed with the coloured lenses if possible. im wondering if you have, how has your child been going does he or she still think the glasses work? the councillor at my sons school has mentioned that the medical profession are up in arms about the whole irlene syndrome label. my son does have dyslexia but he no longer wants to wear the glasses as he says they dont do anything any different than wearing them so im very reluctant to go back and waste another $500 for another colour lense whats your opinions on this” Do you have any advice for a child diagnosed with irlene syndrome?

  • This is new to me. Wishing you all the best of luck with it

  • This is a very interesting story!!! Hope all works out for you!

  • I have heard of this making a huge difference in some children and being of no effect in others and I am inclined to believe that the placebo effect of “the right glasses to help me learn better’ really works, this means that for kids who dont believe they will be helped they ultimately wont, tricky situation.

  • For all of those who wish to know about Irlen coloured lenses. Some people have a problem reading on white backgrounds, ie they can read black on a pale blue background but not on white. There are various differences with this and the coloured lenses give them a background colour so tht they can read. My son had glasses with a brownish colour and it fixed his problem brilliantly. He wore his glasses all through high school and now does not require them.

  • I had my son diagnosed with the same syndrome and the lenses really fixed the problem. He was extremely intelligent but had learning disabilities, and a specialist teacher referred me for testing and it was from there that I was directed to Irelene Coloured lenses. He wore them throughout school and it solved his problems and now has no difficulty at all.

I think you may find that he will struggle without the glasses, but I didn’t have to change his lenses once he was diagnosed. I could do nothing but have praise for them and how they work

  • I hope you found some great advice

  • I vaguely remember my brother having coloured lenses in glasses when I was little but he didn’t keep them and he is just fine. I can’t say that it was Irlene Syndrome though. It appears that there may be a support group in WA so they may be worth contacting for advice http://mentalhealthwa.com/Irlen-Syndrome-Australasia-Inc.html

  • Not a great deal of helpful answers below. Hope you to get the info you needed.

  • Did you manage to get some advice that has helped?

  • Unfortunately not too many helpful answers here, because it is not very well known.

  • I have recently heard of this too and am wondering the same thing!

  • Haven’t heard of this syndrome, hope you found the advice you needed.

  • Did you get the advice you needed?

  • Thanks heaps ! Wondering this myself

  • Sorry I haven’t heard of that before, but good luck for the advice others may give

  • I have not heard of Irlene syndrome I hope things work out well for your son

  • You could ask your GP for a referral to someone else and specify you can’t afford such an expensive consultation. Also I wonder if the school can recommend anyone.

  • I remember when I was in primary school we were asked one by one to read a book and they put different coloured plastic things in top of the words to see if we found them easier to read. I wonder if that was related to this. $500 is a lot!

  • I have not heard of Irene syndrome?

  • I’m unaware as well. have googled for ideas. What are the current trends o.s?
