Conversation about Santa - Mouths of Mums

Hello!

Hi all,
My daughter is 12 and I’m wondering how I go about finding out if she still believes in Santa Claus, in no way do I want to steer her one way or the other. I just want to find out where she’s at. Suggestions welcome 😊

  • I would have thought she probably knows about Santa at that age, but perhaps she just wants to keep the magic going. As a mum of a 7 year old, I worry every year that this might be the year she finds out! Even if they do know, I think there’s something really special about continuing the tradition and enjoying the excitement and magic of Christmas. She will let you know when she’s ready, so for now I would just keep going with it and enjoy the magic while you can.

  • I would say chances are that she does not believe in santa any longer. 12 is a pretty old age to still believe. She would find out from friends at school even if she has not managed to suspect you keeping the traditions alive. I guess start talking about it and mentioning santa and see how she responds. My kids tend to get a sarcastic as they know it’s all make believe.

  • This is a tough one. I think at that age most kids have sadly already been told things by friends at school already so I understand your wanting to know. For us it was actually a teacher that discussed it with the whole class 😳
It’s not an easy thing to bring up if you don’t want to steer them in any direction so I personally would wait until she’s ready to discuss it with you. Try watching Christmas movies or as other have said asking what they want for Christmas. Sometimes kids are too scared to let on to parents that they know the truth so be prepared if she asks if he’s real or not. Goodluck with it! Xx

  • Ask her has she made a list for Santa or something along those lines and see what she says

  • I wouldn’t address this confrontationally but maybe ask subtly ask her what she thinks or what her peers at school say about Santa. I would listen to what she says without interjecting. Or look in general how she behaves and see if she’s play-acting or other social cues, indicating she may keep up appearance for her younger siblings / nieces & nephews or to protect the magic.
You could also play the magic and wait till she comes with questions herself. At her age class mates most likely will break the news

  • “Have you started a list for Santa yet?”
She’ll either enthusiastically say yes or no, or tell you how silly a suggestion that is.
And in case she still believes, don’t keep the pressies in the back of your wardrobe. I stumbled upon mine as a kid there and realised Santa wasn’t real
