Hello!

“Hi mums I have a ex 25 weeker (premature bub) who has just turned 2 (chronological age not corrected) and she is doing really good with everything except talking. She says a few words but that is all, has anyone else experienced this is it normal or should I try to see a speech pathologist? Im at the waiting list to see the traveling Paediatric thats the down fall of living isolated.”

  • When my son was 2,5 years old he spoke about 5 words. He never had a real speech delay, just started a bit later

  • Although every child develops at a different rate, premature babies can be at risk for speech and language delays. If there is a delay here, you want to get onto that as soon as possible and not wait. Other mums may tell you not to stress or worry which is lovely and supportive but early intervention is important and waiting on the advice of well wishers may not be in the best interest of your child. You obviously have concerns otherwise you wouldn’t be asking this question – trust your gut! In terms of rural and remote issues and accessing a speech pathologist, know that you can find speech pathologists online who will conduct a Skype assessment and therapy if needed. You can find out registered therapists who do this on the Speech Pathology Australia website. All that might be needed is a quick assessment and the speech pathologist will let you know if there are delays to be addressed. Worth a shot!

  • Some great comments in here from mums – found reading these very comforting. Sometime other mums can compare and make every milestone into a competition

  • I have a boy who is just over 2 and they don’t accept you till around 2.5years of age. Just keep trying to read with her and encourage words.

  • My son doesn’t speak much and he’s about to turn 2.. I think they speak when they are ready.

  • some take longer, if she is saying a few words then give her time, our little man is 26 months and still only says a few words and this is partly because we know what he wants and never made him ask properly

  • I never feel that my daughters were using the number of words at 2 yrs that were in the milestone guides. My 2.25 yr old only just made it to an 8 word sentence but usually it is just a few. Only 3 months ago it was mostly single words. She didn’t string together 3 words until around 22 mths

  • i would leave it and see how u go :) he will be fine.

  • Well since you already looking on taking her to the dr by all means. Just to make sure

  • The pediatician should have some answers. Is it possible to get a phone consult with anyone earlier?

  • I think it is normal but if you are worried have a chat to your health nurse.

  • how is it going now?

  • Hope all is going well now.

  • Mine is 21 months and they don’t say much either, give it time they will get it in the end

  • How did you go with the talking?

  • At least you are aware of the delay and keeping an eye on it. I hope you found the answers you were seeking.

  • How are you going ? Did you manage to see the travelling pediatrician ?

  • I have a friend who was 3 months premmy and he was a late talker, he also needed speech therapy when he started school, but he’s just fine now.

  • Don’t worry about it yet

  • I hope all goes well and his speech progresses
