No we don’t. No light can get into the rank (which stops bacteria growing). We hav no trees etc on our roof. We have a pipe that catches anything chunky that we can empty and gave never found anything worrying in it. Relatives had a pine tree above their tank and their water needed filtering. We also have no factories etc nearby so I’m not concerned about pollution.
While useful for many things, rainwater is not as pure as you might think, so you can’t assume it’s safe to drink. Rain can wash different types of contaminants into the water you collect (for example, bird poop on your roof could end up in your water barrel or tank).
The general public perception is that rainwater is safe to drink. In most areas of Australia, the risk of illness arising from consumption is low, providing it is visually clear, has little taste or smell and, importantly, the storage and collection of rainwater is via a well maintained tank and roof catchment system.
Water is a valuable resource and rainwater stored in a tank is safe to drink as long as proper steps are taken. You just need to ensure that parts of your rainwater harvesting system are made of safe food-grade materials and properly maintained.
The following are the common methods of water purification.
Boiling. This is a reliable way to purify water. …
Use of Iodine solution, tablets or crystals. This is an effective and more convenient method. …
Use chlorine drops. Chlorine has the ability to kill bacteria in water. …
Use water filter. …
Use Ultraviolet Light.
We have solely tank water for our home. We have screens on the tanks where the water runs in and also on the pipes leading to the house. Some dirt and crap still gets through though
