Hello!

I’m looking into getting the kids a pet rabbit for Christmas, and I was wondering if any of you have/had a pet rabbit? Is it a good idea for a 4 and 8-year-old?

  • I used to have them when I was a kid and still love them now I’m an adult.
My kids have several rabbits and they’re super cute. We had to do them away when we moved to Queensland :(

  • We had a few as children and loved them and then our dad took us out to dinner and ordered rabbit, let’s say no-one ate!!

  • I don’t know about now, but in SA it used to be illegal to sell rabbits as pets. They got around the law by selling food for them in the same purchase. Pet rabbits definitely need to be vaccinated.

  • Bunnies make great pets – fab for the kids to learn to look after an animal and they love being picked up and handled by gentle kids.

  • Yes we did get bunnies, they’re both so wonderful and very entertaining. The kids and I love them, and they love us :)

  • depends on if you want the responsibility. but anyway did you end up getting one/

  • I have not had on in the home but at the Kinder where I work we have a female one its quite skittish and we have toileting issues (it doesn’t always bother to find it’s litter tray so be prepared for that possibility). It cute and fairly timid so the kids love it but the poor thing always seems stressed I think. with only two children it might be a better environment and have had friends that say they love having a bunny at home, let the temperament and personalities of your children be your guide.

  • Did you end up get a bunny?

  • Rabbits are a great family pet for children, if they have been handled from a young age they can be friendly and love a pat and attention.Only downsides are myxomatosis and calici virus which can cause your pet to pass away. Myxomatosis is cruel and a very sad slow way to lose a pet, calici virus though much quicker is horrific as well. In Tasmania you can only immunize against myxomatosis as far as I am aware. If a rabbit is kept inside, in an enclosure, it may be kept safe from these fatal diseases. I have known of people to put mosquito netting over their rabbit hutches if they are outside.Even if you desex your rabbit you are unable to vaccinate them against calici virus in Tasmania at this point in time.

  • A pet rabbit is a great pet they can be so cuddly in my experience the males are more friendly than the females. My children love their rabbits and have jist had babies. They have a rabbit lead for when they take take them into the back yard. They are a lovely pet.

  • I have one friend that has a rabbit and she’s very happy with it. Her daughter suffers of allergies and rabbits are the perfect choice in case of pet allergies.

  • I meant to say in my comment we have guniea pigs not pigs my boo boo..

  • We had one and I would never ever go down that path again…when it was out of the hutch it chewed through power cord and the veranda decking. The hutch it was in had no bottom so it could be moved around the yard….but it dug huge holes and ruined the lawn. It dug so deep it escaped a number of times. The girls can be quite skittish so I don’t recommend them for little kids. A male lop would be your best bet if you are really keen.

  • No bunnies here – but I know people that have bunnies and love them. Like all pets they need lots of TLC.

  • I have 5 pigs for my children,( it was three but one of them was pregnant when we purchased them at 8 weeks old all female. ) they love them but please do buy a cage at least twice the size of the one suggested y the people who sell them. y0u can get some nice cages with extra runsthat can be attached that are easy to clean and move around the garden to help keep the grass short. We also looked at rabbits but they grow so big so quickly. so we then choose guinea pigs. My kids are 3, 5,& 7.

  • Had one years ago – now have Guinea pigs and find them a much friendlier and easier pet.
