Does anyone still cook the Traditional Christmas Lunch like Turkey leg ham traditional christmas pudding and cake and mince pies. I am finding that now people are doing more of the seafood

  • No, we don’t. I live the idea of it but is is just way too hot. Growing up in western Sydney back in the days of no fans or air con, cold has become our tradition. We love the Aussie Xmas of ham, cold chicken & turkey, seafood & salads. Much more suitable for our climate and so much easier.


  • Absolutely! It’s the highlight of the whole day. It just isn’t Christmas without it. We usually take it in turns as a family as to who is hosting. One will host breakfast and the other will host dinner. We will always have a traditional roast meat with chicken or turkey and a ham, plus roasted veggies and salads. We usually all chip in something regardless of who hosts. I love making the trifle.


  • Although we don’t normally do a turkey, the other traditional Christmas meal traditions are cooked at our Christmas – the pudding, roast veggies and leg ham, pork with crackling, chicken and beef. As most of the family are together all day, we have seafood for dinner.


  • No we never did a traditional Christmas lunch. When we lived in Sydney we did every year a Christmas lunch with our dear neighbours but it was mostly a spread of cold foods and platters and it was not as much about the food but rather about connecting. Since we moved to Brisbane we have no friends or family nearby and we skip Christmas lunch all together. We just make a nice dinner


  • We’ve slowly started moving a little away from completely a traditional Christmas lunch. My Mother in Law will always bring a Christmas Ham, then we do have some form of seafood, usually prawns, and then loads of different salads, sides and grazing plates. Mostly just trying to have simple dishes where no one person has to do a whole load of cooking on Christmas day and we all share the load with everyone bringing a plate of something different.


  • YES. Our Chriatmas starts Christmas Eve night with a Roast pork dinner.
    Christmas morning we have a special christmas breakfast.
    Lunch is a Baked Ham with various salads and a pavlova for dessert.
    Dinner is Turkey with roast veggies and a christmas pudding with custard and cream.
    Then we live on left overs.


  • I think for most families it is time and most people don’t have that which has resulted in a shift with Christmas lunch. I also believe it’s because it’s warmer and a hot meal on a warm day isn’t as enjoyable. In my household we tend to have chicken and some salads or even a bbq as it’s easier to organise.


  • We went with tradition every year and then with discussion and reflection we decided to make the pivot from a lot of work on Christmas day to a more relaxed day. Christmas is about good food and good company and relaxing times with everyone being able to enjoy the day and there being equity for everyone. It has been an interesting and good journey to pivot from traditional to fusion to cold.


  • We do it still, either just my household or when we get the whole family together. We do a little more pot luck style with sides and desserts and will have mains like glazed ham and a chicken. Everyone definitely gets into the prawns. My brother lines up at the best place in the city and gets a few kilos


  • I never have. I do a buffet with cold cuts of ham, turkey, chicken etc plus various other things like cheeses and salads. People make their own sandwiches and / or plates. It works really well for us – not a lot of work, everyone can help, and it suits hotter weather.


  • Our house is very traditional. We have a turkey every year. We also have a ham and roast pork. We have either Christmas or chocolate puddings for desert. My family back ground is English so very traditional. I have been to someone’s house for Christmas and they did seafood and it just didn’t feel like Christmas for me lol


  • We have changed it up over the years; we have cooked traditional Christmas lunch when catering for many people and for family. We have also changed it up and gone to a fusion pathway; combining various cuisines. This year we are changing it up again and having a cold lunch. We still make lots of Christmas food including a pudding to eat over the Christmas/holiday season.
