  • Along with my response below about investing in good cookbooks and particular foods to cook; it is also a great idea to get children involved in cooking. Cooking and being educated in food and what is good and healthy for bodies is so important. Children tend to like food they have prepared with adults.

  • Great question! We need to pack our sons lunch box next term for the last term of kindergarden so I have been looking for ideas. A few that I have so far are:
    – ham and cheese fritatas in muffin tins
    – apple and oat muffins – which essentially repricate a bowl of oats in the form of a muffin – 2c rolled oats, 1c milk, 1 tsp baking powder, 2 overripe bananas (mashed), 1 grated apple (grated), 1 egg, ¼ cup honey & ½ cup sultanas. Soak oats in wet ingredients for half an hour. Mix. 180 degrees for 20-25min.
    – peanut butter bars (we buy these from aldi)
    – apples

  • Home made Pizza Breads, Breakfast Muffins, Cheese Sticks. Crackers are always tasty and easy. As someone said below Finger foods are the way to go. Sandwiches cut into bite sized pieces are somehow always more appealing as are fruits. We always chop them into ready to eat bites in little containers or bags.

  • I used to bake vegetable muffins, make protein balls and bake healthy oats cookies. I always had a fruit, a vegetable, a carb source and a protein source in their lunch boxes. I would make sure there was plenty of variation and try to add something different to the lunchbox each day; things like a boiled egg, a vegetarian sausage, nuts, savoury unsweetened banana chips, roast chick peas, roast fava beans, unsweetened yoghurt pouches, cheese sticks, multi grain rolls, protein rich bread, sweet potato muffins, spinach muffins etc

  • My little guy loves muffins, and the Wholesome Cinnamon Breakfast Muffins on RecipeTinEats is a huge winner for us. I only use about 70g of sugar in the mix and find that the crumb keeps nicely. It lasts 4-5 days in the fridge and can be easily frozen and thawed. We also love making mini pizzas with heaps of veg and cooked mince. Easy, nutritious and filling

  • Fingers foods always seem to be a winner. There are plenty of good options for finger food. Savoury muffins and mini quiches are very yummy and filling and easy to eat too. We invested in some great cookbooks for this age bracket. The recipes are easy and quick to make and the ingredients affordable too. It is worth investing in some good cookbooks.

  • I find mini muffins to be good, a mix of savory and sweet muffins are perfect or even home made muesli bars are a great alternative if your kids like them. i get a lot of inspiration from Instagram, it might be worth following a few mums and see what they make for their kids.

  • Personally I love making 3 ingredient mini pizzas bases and topping with variety of favourites. They then get to pick a flavour to take with them. The base is made with 2 cups flour, 1 cup Greek yoghurt and 2 tablespoons of olive oil mixed into a dough.
Cut your circles and top with whatever your child likes… cheese, pumpkin, chicken, spinach etc and cook in oven!
