Hello!

I am going to be doing elf on the shelf again this year – this will be my second year. I don’t have a creative bone in my body. I would love to hear what you have done that is very cheap but fun for the kids each night. I am trying to not buy props and use (recycle items) what I have in the home already. I know there are Facebook groups available to obtain ideas from but I would love to hear any really cheap creative ideas that I could use as I want to have it all ready before the darn thing arrives LOL.

  • There’s some really great Facebook posts done on this every year with great ideas which I usually screenshot and use. Although I did see an idea where the elf foot is bandaged and he has a note from Santa saying he has to stay still for three weeks ???????? I might try this…

  • No worries, Elf on the Shelf doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive! Here are a few simple, fun, and budget-friendly ideas using things you might already have at home:

Marshmallow Snowball Fight: Set the elf up with mini marshmallows scattered around as “snowballs” with a note saying, “Ready for a snowball fight?”
Toy Parade: Line up toy cars, action figures, or dolls with the elf leading the parade.
Cereal Angel: Lay the elf on a table with a pile of cereal (like Cheerios) arranged as if it made a snow angel.
Elf Movie Night: Set up the elf with a small popcorn bowl and a note saying they’re having a movie night—use the TV remote or a tablet as a prop.
Toilet Paper Sled: Position the elf on a toilet paper roll like it’s riding a sled down the stairs.
Baking Mischief: Place the elf in a bowl or next to a mess of flour with tiny footprints leading away.

  • I reluctantly gave in and started elf’g this year (arghhh!) and I’ve kept it simple. Drawing hearts on the bathroom mirror with lipstick, unravelling a bit of toilet paper, eating her vitamin lollies, reading books, playing hide and seek together, climbing up our indoorplant. Tonight he is going to poop out some chocolate buttons on the kitchen counter. I bought the two mini elves from K mart (one f, one m) so the male is often doing naughty things to the female like trapping her under a glass. I’m also thinking something with toothpaste.

  • I have also found helpful sites online that provide elf on the shelf ideas for extra inspiration. I also found a book that has some useful ideas. Sometimes it can be good to go with themes for elf on the shelf; that can help to find fun and creative things to do.

  • We go with fun ideas with our elf; hiding in the pantry, cupboards, drawers and other similar places. Our elf also likes to hide in the garden with other statues and ornaments. Also; likes to set up tea parties and picnics on a blanket with snack foods. Also; dressing up too. Let the imagination run free.

  • I’ve never done Elf on the shelf myself and am not really a fan.
But I know many people and kids love it and spend a lot of time working out their idea’s
There are a lot of idea’s out there on various websites and pinterest too

  • I am not a lover of Elf on the Shelf to me its just plain silly and a more money making grab for parents.

  • I’ve never done Elf on the Shelf but It’s a cute idea and I’m keen to see what ideas are out there. Some people are so creative. I’m thinking of it for my grandsons.

  • I’m keen to hear what others who have done it before might suggest. I’ve never done elf on the shelf. I really like the videos and photos where the elf is doing something a little fun, the ones that seem mean spirited for the kiddos is a bit much for me. Maybe I’m a big sook haha
