Hello!

I bought a Crofton Enamel coated cast iron pan from Aldi and wanted to know how best to maintain it as I found food sticks to the surface even though I oil the pan. Does it require seasoning if it has the enamel coating?

  • My tips:

    1. After cooking, deglaze pan with warm water as it helps bring up bits of food.

    2. Wash with warm soapy water. No scourer or steal wool.

    3. Once dry, wipe out with a neutral oil like vegetable oil. Don’t go overboard with the oil.

    4. Heat it to very hot and smoking. Once the oil has smoke and lost its shine, heat off and let it cool in place.

    Be careful and don’t leave it unattended. While prices is 10 – 15 mins


  • Soak the pot in warm water for 15 to 20 minutes before washing, especially if it has heavy cooked-on food residue.


  • Let the burnt bits soak to help lift it


  • I use a spray non stick oil which helps reduce sticking


  • To help food from sticking to the pan, ensure you use fat (butter or Canola Oil – not cooking spray) and make sure it is hot before you add the food. When cleaning, avoid letting food sit in the pan after cooking and ensure the pot is cool before soaking in warm water for 15-20 minutes. Use a soft sponge only to rub clean.


  • You do the right thing by storing the pan in oil. Although the pan may be dish washer safe it’s better to hand wash it. Fill your dutch oven with enough water to cover the staining/stuck on bits and bring it to a boil. Then, add in a few spoonfuls of baking soda. Let the mixture bubble away as you use a wooden spoon or spatula to scrape up any of the blackened bits. Do not use metal or scrub sponches.
