I have seen/read very mixed reviews on the mirena. It was my last option before a hysterectomy – we are done with kids – I also had an ablation. It’s been 8 months since I had it done and apart from making weight harder to lose it’s great!

My periods were very painful. I’d spend the first day of my period in a lot of pain (vomitting and diarrhea from the pain)

The Mirena was recommended. It has been 3 years. If I do get a period it is very light. No pain.
My mum also tried this option as at 50 she still had a painful and heavy period. She is also very happy with the results.

I do not recommend mirena’s what so ever. I had mine in about 2 weeks and got rushed into the emergency room in excruciating pain. My mirena moved and lodged into the side of my uterus causing a punture which the doctors assured me wouldnt happen as it rare but im willing to call bull. Stick to the rod in your arm ladies, much safer.

I have had IUD’s since having my children 12 yrs ago, the last change I found to be a little uncomfortable as they have changed how they do them but I have always had a positive experience.

I know a Mum who had the old style put in quite a few years ago. For some reason it shifted out of position and a baby was the result of that. I don’t know if she had another one put in or not.

I’m currently on my second Mirena and I haven’t had any problems with them. It hurt a lot getting it inserted and I noticed my cramps were a bit worse for the first few months but I didn’t have any periods for the whole time just some odd light spotting on the rare occasion. Obviously YMMV because every body is different but I’d recommed giving it a try if your Dr thinks it’s right for you.

I had 2 IUD’s the first one didn’t reduce my period that much. I had it in for about a year and got it out. Many years later after many mishaps with flooding and going through 2 packets of tampons and 2 packets of pads each month when I had my periods. I was seen but multiple doctors that told me to deal with it. (Female and Male doctors) After flooding at work 5 minutes after changing my tampon and pad I lost it and went to the first doctor I could see. He was shocked that no-one had got me to see a gynaecologist and he recommended the Mirena. Well all I can say is what a difference it made to my life. This IUD was so much better than the first one I had and I had a bit of spotting in the first year. Because I didn’t use it for contraception I had it in for 7 years. My daughter had a Mirena but she had all sorts of trouble. I can only tell you what I experienced and I was so relieved knowing that I wasn’t going to have painful and heavy periods again. I did have my tubes tied about 20 years before I got the Mirena in. That is the reason for not using the Mirena for contraception. Hope this helps you

Ooohhh, dear. I’ve not had any personal experience, just second hand news

I have an IUD and haven’t had any issues. Best decision i ever made. A handle of friends told me not to get a Mirena but i think it was because they were misinformed or hadn’t don’t there own research about the Mirena. I haven’t had any problems-i don’t have a period at all so i am fine with that.

I’ve had a mirena for a few years and it has been great for lessening/stopping my heavy periods. The only side affect that I found was possible weight gain, but that could just be the chocolate !
I haven’t had any other negative experience with it. Good luck with your decision.

I’m sorry, I’ve never used one – I have heard a lot of bad stories about infections, but if your doctor is recommending it then you should probably put more weight on that.

I had a Mirena and at first I found it worked really well, I even stopped having a period for about a year, then I started getting some sever cramping, irregular spotting and it made me rather ill. I had to have it removed and unfortunately have not been able to have another one. Sorry, I didn’t have a good experience to report. Perhaps speak to another Dr for a second medical opinion. I’ll defibe keeping an eye on these responses. I’ve been looking into it for myself as well but its very hard to find information about it. Ive read the book my doc gave me and some of the side effects were a bit off putting (I’m sure extremely unlikely) but then work of mouth seems better and the few people I have talked to have had no problems. I am still undecided about doing it.

I have had 1 and find them easy to have done minimal pain and yes does considerably reduce your periods . just need to find the right doctor who is experienced

I don’t have experience myself but have a friend who has a IUD and she’s positive about it. Not only did it reduce her heavy pains it also is a very easy contraceptive according to her..
