Floating floorboards are fantastic. Easy to lay, cheapish to buy and are even easy to lay on existing uneven flooring. Then you can add some mats etc to jazz it up

it is up to you really. You can get the boards that you can just clip together or get a floating floor system that you lay down over the existing surface.

You want something that doesn’t have to be re-sealed every year or so as some types of timber floors do. Ask plenty of questions about durability, general care and maintenance.
Be aware that some tiles classed as being non-slip can be really slippery in damp conditions including steamy to the extent of being very dangerous. Some types of floors including some vinyls dry streaky too and show every littly tiny drop of water quite prominently

Just make sure whatever you go with suits the needs of your family; wear and tear; pets, cleaning and maintaining. Laminate works well for us with lots of wear and tear; still looks incredibly good; just be careful of any water spills and clean as you would any flooring.

Just be careful with tiles and children – they can be slippery.

I have tiles thorughout and they are great except for having to mop the whole darn lot and also sand being trekked in.

I have the single layer of old floorboards too, I think the cheapest options is to get it sanded back and polished. Mine look great!

Laminate works well as is easy to clean and maintain.

A friend of mine got wood printed tiles, so it looks like you have floorboards but you also get the added bonus of easy to clean tiles.

We have just put down Vinyl Planks that are wonderful. They are not effected by water like wood flooring. Most companies can put down under flooring to get things even. We chose this type of flooring as it is great with kids and pets. It’s quite. Easy to keep clean. There are many good brands out there and their prices vary. Have a budget and go shopping. I am happy to tell you who we used in Sydney. I did my homework and got a great product at a good price. (Bamboo and Laminate look great but be careful as when using in kitchen and laundries if there is a water leak like a hot water service or a dishwasher leak it really destroys the flooring and warps it.) A lot of shops have this vinyl planks down these day like Chemist Shops and River’s Stores and it comes in so many great colours and wood looks.
