Hello!

Been recently diagnosed with gestational diabetes and struggling to find consistent info on what foods to avoid (besides the obvious like candy).
For example, some sources state to avoid watermelon, while others say that 1-2 servings of any fruit is okay. Some say Milo is fine while others say not.

A bit confused with this new subject. Anyone who has experienced GD know what’s some foods to avoid that might not be so obvious? Especially what helped regular blood sugar levels.

  • Isn’t it generally foods high in sugar, including white carbohydrates which just changes to sugar once digested. But really, you should be eating as healthy as possible regardless

  • I would suggest you get back to see your doctor who will be able to help, maybe even referring you to a dietician

  • All bakery stuff sweet bread

  • Pasta, rice, bread and high sugar fruits. Of course the obvious choxolatand lollies goes without saying but everything in moderation and just small bits is ok

  • Avoids sweet things some fruits like banana and mango use water alot and exceicise is very important and walking

  • My doctor gave me a great list but I can’t recall it off the top of my head

  • I would talk to your GP to get the best info.

  • I am not a big fane of Dr. Google but I went to a Dietician and was given a list of recommended low GI foods, also a list to avoid. The list is almost the same, Are you having constant blood tests? I know a lady who used a very small amount of Yellow Box Honey instead of sugar. Some have ongoing issues with other Diabetes but continuing with the diet after birth will reduce the risk of that. There is a list of good carbohydrates (they keep your BSL at an even keel – not high). Bad carbohydrates only make you fell “full” for a short time – give short burst of energy then very tired quickly, also you are looking for more food. Burger Bread Rolls have the highest sugar content. You may also need to eat a low salt diet. I was shocked to find that even some natural fruit or vegetables (I can’t remember which) that natural salt in them.

  • Avoid fruit juice but i am pretty sure you will have appointment with doctor and you should get some information there.

  • Try Low GI foods – also if you are going to have bread – have seeded whole grain over white.
Not too much fruit due to sugar content.
Also stay away from low fat as those products are higher in sugar.
