Hello!

I have just toilet trained my 2.5 year old son. He has caught on quickly and been dry for a week however he won’t do a poo in the toilet. He did the first day but has done it in his jocks ever since :( What can I do to help him go?

  • So normal. The toilet is huge and those little buttocks don’t fit. Many kids have a fear to drop down in the toilet and then that poo (something you proudly made) is just flushed away !! Sad and scary, because maybe you can get flushed away yourself !
First of all toilet aids like a step up, handle bars, a smaller seat can help. But maybe the step is too big and it could help to offer the potty for a poo instead. Then empty it in the toilet. Then move to the toilet once he’s happy to do it in the potty.
Make sure to make it a positive experience, be patient and no pressure.

  • Some great tips here that I’ll be passing on to my son. His son is struggling to understand the whole going to the toilet palava

  • Put something really interesting on the back of the toilet door so that he has something to look at when he is sitting. maybe a pic of his favourite hero???
When he gets older try putting a copy of the times table chart…same reason…..but he is still a little young for that…..that could be useful later!

  • He will learn slowly. If he has a time of day that he goes you can sit with him and encourage him to go.

  • with my daughter i say if she poos in potty shes gets choclate, the only time she will get it now because its working this way she will sit on the potty for 30 mins at a time trying to poo and she does in the end and is so happy about it then she try to do poos all the time

  • THIS is totally normal they get scared of going on the toilet to do poos as it’s the noise and so foreign to them ! The only thing that worked for my child was a reward chart and every time he did a poo he got a sticker it takes time and they do regress but so far so good ! Good luck!

  • This is a common thing when toilet training. They seem quite happy to do a wee but a bit scared to do poo. Have you got a small seat for him so he knows he won’t fall in? I would possibly even get a cheap potty to do poos then get him to help flush it then gradually try the toilet again. 2.5 is still quite early to pick it up so just keep encouraging him :)

  • It will come with confidence, eventually he will just stop doing it in his pants and use the toilet

  • Don’t stress too much, he will learn gradually .

  • Maybe just keep asking if he needs to poo, and just keep taking hI’m to the toilet.
