Hello!

Where do you start to look for a tutor. My daughter is struggling in Year 9 and needs a maths tutor. It’s hard for us because we don’t know really what shes learning been along time since I was at school. She is very stressed out about it. If anyone know where I can start looking for a tutor?

  • Ask your daughter’s school teacher whether he/she knows of an older student who would be willing to tutor your child. My daughter tutored a younger student in two subjects. He would contact her when he needed help and they came to an agreement as to fees.

  • My son found an English one recommended by one of his mates , and my daughter found a couple of them from her school teachers. In your case, it is best talk to her maths teacher first to find out what is she struggling with and see what he/she recommends first and mention about tutoring and perhaps she knows someone. Also tell your child she should never be shy to ask her teacher for help as that is their job in the first place . Once she opens up her struggles , she will be less stressed .

  • I would start my search at the school. Maybe the maths teacher there would like to earn some extra cash by tutoring. Or a fellow student who excels at maths

  • Interesting comments! I would ask the school as well!

  • could you possibly arrange a meeting with her year advisor and possibly some of her teachers to see where she is lacking and maybe one of her teachers may know of tutors in the local area. my daughter is in yr 3 and we found our tutor through a teacher at her school.

  • I know some kids that got connected to a tutor through learning support at school. Like others have said local tutoring businesses are usually pretty good. Do you know any uni students? I was always happy to tutor for some cash. I used to get the kids to show me their school books and what they were learning, the. Find extra activities to learn it a different way they would get it. So don’t worry too much about not knowing that they’re learning. It’s also pretty standard per grade. But the maths teacher would probably tell you the topics at least. Good work for finding out how to get your daughter extra help!

  • Have you considered Kumon?

  • I’d go firstly to the school and her teacher and ask if they know anyone that would be appropriate. I am a teacher and we offer after-school tutorials (run by teachers) and there are always past students or kids of staff that are keen to tutor younger students. If this doesn’t work, have a look in the yellow pages for a tutoring company or contact a local school with Year 11/12 or advertise at the local university or online…. good luck!

  • Your school should be able to suggest a tutor. Also sometimes the school book shops might have ads. Carefully check out the tutors. You should be able to ask them to provide the name and number of one or two past students who would be happy to recommend them.

  • Yeah I found a place and the tutors are teachers not students so that will be better

  • I would start with contacting the school and her maths teacher in particular. They may be able to either give her a little more help at school or give you contacts for tutors in your area. Also I have found there is lots on the internet about how to do things which might help you to help her. Good luck

  • Ask the school if they can recommend anyone also on our local notice board in the shopping centre there are often uni students offering tutoring too. Check their references and experience etc first.

  • I think the School would be the best place to start. I’m sure they would have people they suggest for tutors or know of the right direction to point you. Otherwise does your School have a FB page? Could you ask in there if they do? Hope you find one x
