Hello!

How can I remove a urine smell (courtesy of my toddler) from my gorgeous large rug? I’ve tried shampoos, sprays, steam mops, vacuuming, leaving it out in the sun (wanted to leave it out in the rain, but it hasn’t rained much lately). I don’t want a professional carpet clean, as the chance of my toddler reoffending is high…

  • Just reading up an even better solution.
Make a solution of baking soda, peroxide and any dish detergent. The combination of the three is often powerful enough to drive away strong urine smells. The solutions is eight fluid ounces of peroxide, three tablespoons of baking soda, and a few drops of dish detergent.

  • For a more mild urine stain: Add a pinch of mild dish soap with warm water until sudsy and pour onto the urine stain, then blot the carpet with a rag or paper towel until the stain is gone. For a more resilient urine stain: Soak a rag in a mixture of vinegar and water (1:1 ratio) and blot the stain on your carpet.

  • Yes I would try first baking soda too. Baking soda naturally neutralizes odors. Sprinkle it liberally on the damp area or even an old urine stain, and work the powder gently into the fibers of any fabric, rug or carpet. Let the baking soda sit overnight for maximum odor absorption, then vacuum it up to remove the smell completely.
When this doesn’t help I would try a pet odor removal spray

  • Bicarb soda and vinegar. The Bicarb draws it out and the vinegar removes any odour. You could also try a splash of eucalyptus or lemongrass oil

  • All good answers l will use as well!

  • Repeat steam cleaning. Spraying with Glen20

  • Repeated steam mopping should do the job. Steam clean and place in the sun, hopefully will kill and smell causing bacteria. Also Glen20 spray is good too

  • Bicarb – sprinkle it on, scruff it into the fibres with your fingers, and next day vacuum like mad… Should work well!

  • Thanks everyone – these answers might help me too!

  • sprinkle with Bi Carb and leave overnight vacuum … repeat

  • Bio soda and vinegar will definitely get rid of the smell.

  • try one of the products made for removing pet urine – that might get rid of the smell

  • i’ve found wool wash has done great with rug but then I got a spot clean which works great. I think you can also buy some pet product which would probably help with the urine smell

  • There is actually a get product called Urine-off! It’s designed for dogs/cats but urine is urine so it should work for your problem too!
