Hello!

My Mil gave both my children engraved gifts, the issue is the dates are wrong, I have enquired about getting them re engraved but it can’t be done due to the type of metal… Woukd you tell your Mil or just go out and buy new gifts and get them engraved yourself.. Hubby doesn’t want to tell her but I’m worried if we don’t correct her she will do it again…. These were supposed to be sentimental gifts but are now meaningless with the wrong dates..

  • I’d probably check in with her as it was likely an accident and might help her with the dates in future. Even with the wrong dates I’d still keep them.

  • I would be telling her in a nice way, maybe oh these are fantastic and we love it but the dates are wrong! My MIL constantly gets me birth date wrong every year, its starting to becoming an inside joke now

  • Oh what a quandary. If the dates she got wrong are birth dates, there’s no way you can’t tell her of the mistake as she’ll eventually realise

  • If you haven’t already done so, ask her son to tell her. She may be less inclined to be offended than if you say anything. I suggest you start the conversation with “do you realise………,”

  • Tricky conversation to have but if you don’t say anything then there’s the chance that she’ll use the wrong dates again.

  • Hope you managed to sort out this issue.

  • What a shame! A tricky dilemma indeed, but, I feel you should tell MIL so the problem doesn’t arise again.

  • its tricky

  • Very tricky. I think you do have to tell her; surely she’d eventually realise anyway.

  • It may continue if not corrected.

  • I would tell her, but maybe ask if she has got confused with something else. Painful I can imagine but it might be an innocent mistake.

  • I will tell her

  • Hard one indeed. When you don’t feel for telling her directly you could tell her indirectly ? For example give her on her BD a framed baby photo of both your children with the date of birth added to the picture

  • Tricky. But yes, I think I would tell her, to avoid that the same error reappears in the future!
