Needs: They’re couch potatoes who enjoy short bursts of exercise (20–30 minutes daily). They adapt well to homes, even apartments.
Vet care: Regular checkups are fine, but you may need to monitor their teeth, as dental issues can arise.
Training: They might need help adjusting to a home environment, especially with stairs or unfamiliar sounds.
Cost: Many rehoming programs cover desexing, vaccinations, and initial vet care, making adoption straightforward.

My niece had one and he was such a great dog he was a big dog he never chased the cats or small dogs he never once barked but would run up to the gate with the other dogs that were barking but not him. He did sleep a lot but he was good with the kids never threatened anyone was a great sweet dog to have around and was no trouble and didn’t eat a lot. So take a chance and get one they also are snuggle pot and love you and very loyal.

Join some discussion groups but from my experience they are quite an easygoing dog. Possibly worth considering getting some pet insurance though as they may be more prone to developing health issues later in life!

I would ring a couple of vets and ask about issues with greyhounds. There may issues with interbreeding or their previous diet. You could ask the place you want to get a dog from what its diet is and check whether will have impacted the dog’s health in any way. Some do need a fair bit of exercise, especially in the early stages or they may get bored easily. One question to ask is why the dog no longer races and determine that way if there is any issues. It probably isn’t a good choices if you have cat/s at all.

A friend of mine adopted a greyhound through a greyhound rescue group in Perth WA. The dog sleeps a lot and doesn’t need a lot of walking which surprised me. She is an ex-racer and still looks like a racer even though she doesn’t train anymore. She isn’t too keen on the pet parrot and tries to get it through the window, mind you the parrot stirs the dog up. She doesn’t bark a lot and is quite friendly but is very possessive of her food, kennel and toys. I think she might be this way because she wasn’t treated very well when she was with the first owners. Not having much body fat she feels the cold so a jumper or coat helps.

Greyhounds are great pets and how lovelt to rehome a greyhound, giving them a loving family after racing etc. They shouldn’t need more vet visits than any other breed. They can get teeth isdues but ask the rehoming agency about this as it will differ between dogs too.

I think its fantastic. They just need plenty of space for excercise and a good diet

Greyhounds tend to be pretty lazy but it all depends on the dog itself, the adoption agency will match a greyhound they feel will fit in with your needs and wants as a family and they are generally pretty good about taking them back if they dont fit in with your family. They are definitely prone to dental disease so you will need to keep up with dental care to reduce the cost of dental procedures etc.

My Mum re-homed one and ended up having to give him back. He became very food obsessed, he broke their chest freezer trying to get to food! He ended up so bad he attacked her other dog so they returned him. They were worried he would do it to my girls. They said to my mum that this is a very unusual case for this to happen and he clearly wasn’t ready to be homed. I’ve heard from other families that they love it!
