  • arghh I have the opposite problem with my youngest… She wants to go to school…. NOW…. and being a September baby she still has two years to go. I think because she sees her brother and sisters go everyday she wants to as well. My eldest was a different story though.. Do they do a 3yo kindy program at your school? That really helped with my eldest we would go to school one day a week for a couple of hours ( parents stayed) and that helped a lot as she got to know the school/kids/teachers etc while I was still there.

  • our kindy gave us the opportunity to do visits in the lead up to starting. it was good to slowly introduce to the new environment

  • I found that by attending a pre-school one day a week prior to starting Kindergarten, it gave my child an idea of what school was going to be like. She loved both pre-school and Kindergarten.

  • Talk to them about it a lot, in positive terms. Let them help choose things like their lunchbox. If possible, have a playdate with one or two kids who’ll be starting kindy too, so they have a couple of familiar faces on day one.

  • I placed my child in pre-school for one day a week to help her get used to other children, teachers, routines etc. She handled kindergarten really well.

  • The school my kids went to had kinder orientation every Friday morning through the month of November, prior to commencement if school in February. It telos, but my son hated it and my daughter loved it, so still comes down to the child as to how they cope

  • There should be Kindergarten packs too.

  • Kindergartens should be able to provide you with information and tips about how to prepare and how to settle in.

  • I took my daughter to pre-school for a couple of days per week just to get her used to spending the day with other children and following a routine.

  • Our local school had kinder orientation. Every Friday during the Nov prior to your child starting kinder, they go along for a couple of hours in the morning. They get to meet the other kids, teachers, see where they’ll be going, just hides them an idea of it all. It helps

  • With most of my children it was easy, they were taken to the place to see how it works. They got to play there with other children there too. Before going we practised getting dress properly, being able to do the shoes up. How to open the lunch box and what order the different meals were eaten. Most of mine went to a full day , a few times a week. One child did not like the place and was totally different adapting to the place.
I have my youngest ones starting next year, at least they have each other and due to the cut off period will already be five as only had their birthdays a few days ago. They have learnt through their siblings what school will be like.
