I found it to be quite difficult to find information on my family tree. I think you may find that some families are easier to find information on than others – it’s also useful if you know more about your gf amily before starting out.
It can be easy or hard depending how much you already know and can get out of living relatives; and where the family is from. Many local libraries have a family history section with FREE access to the most important payfor websites like ancestry, findmypast, and others. The volunteers might also give you help with where to start. Familysearch is a Mormon website with free information and the Mormon church also has access to resources and you can contact them even if you are not a member of the church to use them. Once you start finding information it can be helpful to organize your findings in your own personal tree (or add it to a website where you can refer to it again). Familysearch.org has some free software for storing the information you have from which you can print trees and family summaries etc.
I didn’t do the research, but I’m lucky enough to have a family tree for my mother in law, my dad and my mum. I love reading them and seeing what went on
my great aunt manually tracked down and completed a heap of our family tree on one side. Ancestry is an online one that is supposed to be quite good but I think it costs. Other than that you can buy programs like family tree maker and similar that are quite good. Good luck with it all.
This is a great question. I’m interested too! I have some information that my Mum has written down for me but I haven’t progressed. I was going to try ancestry.com but merely because that’s the only family tree website I know of! I’m keen for any tips too!
i want to, I actually have tried to research my girls Dads Family tree so they know their history as they are the last in line of the name here for this family, and if i never have a boy well then thats it, but with families as they are nowadays I cannot even get a grandfathers name out of anyone its crazy. I’ve tried other family members but its like everyone just shuts down and does the whole oh you should ask X Y and Z and then you ask Z and they bat you back to Y etc…. I really would like some tips also though please.
My daughter and I have done a very comprehensive family family tree. We started with close family then got really involved and found out some very interesting things. Amazing how many other families overlapped ours!! Got some really useful info from other trees and added to our knowledge. Some surprises too!! We used My Heritage (find on internet) and that made it very easy and we learnt a lot from other members.
This is a struggle for me, as my grandad’s name was Jimmy Jones – can you imagine how many names this turns up LOL and on the German side, I have no living relatives, or paperwork…. Maybe when I am retired…
I have copies of both sides of my family tree, luckily I didn’t gave to do the research. Ancestry.com is meant to be good. And someone also recommended the Mormon church, apparently they keep records of everyone in the world. Haven’t tried it, but worth a look
