Hello!

My hubby and I are thinking about taking the kids out of school for 6 months and live in Canada (skiing). We would love them to experience a proper white winter and explore the wildlife in spring. All of our kids will still be primary school (years 5, 4 and 1). I would love to hear others experiences.

  • What a lovely idea ! How did it work out with the homeschooling ?

  • I have never left the country but have moved to a few different states as a holiday and just being somewhere else is great and really memorable and enjoyable

  • Sorry, I have no further advice, but……What a wonderful experience for them. They will learn so much just from the experience of being in another country and travelling.

  • When I was in Year 3 we lived overseas for five months. Prior to leaving my parents asked my teacher for any textbooks/worksheets that I could work through so that I didn’t fall behind, and she obliged. I did my homework daily while we were away and was able to keep up with the rest of the class when I got back. I hope you all have a wonderful trip.

  • There may be some online communities or forums that can support you with this and provide some ideas.

  • As a child my brother and sisters were home schooled while we were living aboard a boat sailing up the east coast of Australia. We stopped at different places so dad or mum could get money from jobs. We did our lessons on beaches, on board the boat either downstairs or up top.
Also remember if it is only for six months , that the northern Hemisphere school terms are different to the southern hemisphere. Winter there will be our summer time with not much schooling done. If staying in one place could even attend school there.

  • I think they’re young enough to nearly be able to get away with 6 months off school and not miss too much. But contact your local school and see what they suggest

  • Technology will also help with staying connected and with schooling when travelling and living abroad.

  • No experience with home schooling but I would suggest your local Educational facility would be able to assist you with home schooling support and ideas.
