Hello!

My mum used to make homemade play dough but I have forgotten the recipe. I know she used to cook it on the stove and I think used baking powder? If anyone know I’d love this again. It makes the best dough.

  • It’s just flour, water, salt, cream the tartar, oil and food colouring.

  • Pretty sure it’s cream of tartare you need to make play dough, not baking soda. It’s such an easy thing to make and kids just love it

  • recipe on cream of tartar. made it and is great!

  • Oh great question! I need soemthing edible incase my son eats it!

  • Theres also one called cloud dough, which is basically flour and oil I think. its a bit softer I’m pretty sure. They have a recipe on kidspot.

  • I read a few blogs about making it with conditioner, the Mums didn’t recommend it.

  • I simply love making play dough; creating new colours!

  • Thanks everyone, you have helped greatly.

  • I agree with the posters who suggest buying cream of tarter and using the recipe on the tub. If you want to make several colours, you can delay the food colouring until the dough is ready (and cooled enough to handle) and then break it into portions and add a different colour to each (I use gloves to knead it in so I don’t end up with coloured hands!)

  • 2 cups flour,2 cups water,1 cup cooking salt,4 teaspoons cream of tartar,2 tablespoons cooking oil, food colouring.
In a heavy based saucepan, mix all the dry igredients, then add oil, water and colouring.Cook over a low heat, stirring until mix pulls away from sides of pan. Knead slightly almost immediately.
Or a quicker , easier way is to boil the water and stir into the mix. You can knead in some glitter as well.

  • Your mum used cream of tartar, which is a powder. The recipe was on the pack. You can buy it at the supermarket and can add your own food colouring and even a little fragrance with a drop of natural essential oils. Have fun.

  • if you buy a tub of mckenzies cream of tartar the recipe is on there
