Hello!

My daughter is 10 and has always been a little anxious. She has trouble getting to sleep so we have tried meditation, audio books etc which have helped but not lately and I’m not sure why. In the last few days she has had severe panic attacks, getting very angry and frustrated and I don’t know why or what to do. There has been no change in our lifestyle or drama. It breaks my heart to see this happen cause I don’t know what to do to help her…. doctors is our next step tomorrow. Any advice would be much appreciated ????

  • A GP can be the best source for getting help with anxiety. They can refer you to someone that can assist your daughter.


  • You could read her this book which my daughter finds very helpful What to do when you worry too much a kid’s guide to overcoming anxiety, it actually speaks to the child and really shows how to calm down. I hope this helps and it is not easy to have anxious kid however it will get better. Take care and stay strong.


  • One of my sister in law has anxiety and both her children has anxiety. In her case it is inherited and environmental as her family comes from a non English background when they came over here to live and had a very hard life. From what she has told me , she is prone to this because her personality is of melancholy nature and is easily worried over everyday things eg what everyone else thinks etc.. I would seek an advice of a doctor who specialises in children if you think this is getting serious to truly find out why she worries so much and to rule out any other issues . For a child to not get to sleep could be a hidden problem that could be anything that she is not happy with and hopefully she can open up to someone she trusts which is not always a parent . Hope you both get the support you need.


  • When she has severe pannick attacks I thing it’s time to get a referral for a psychologist via you GP. Free psychologist appointments are available via ATAPS, google for a medical practice nearby who run this program.

  • My grandson is anxious and worries alot about little things. We got him a book and a box.
    At the same time each day ( whenever suits) is his “worry time”. He goes into a quiet room and writes down what hes worried about and puts them in the box.
    The next day he does the same thing , but first he goes through the box and throws away the things that are no longer worrying him… It seems to help him realize that somethings are not worth wasting time worrying over and he tends to not think about his worries as much outside of “worry time”


  • Best thing to talk to a doctor indeed. I suffer of anxiety and I’m taking medication for that. But I’m 51, while your daughter is just 10. Meditation of anything else that helps her concentrate on the present should help, like coloring books for example. Let us know what the doctor said. Success!!
